How to Find a Good Keyword to Rank For?

Let's say I wanted to rank for the keyword, how to be an affiliate marketer, but when I go to Google and it says that there are 21,100,000 results but when I search for "how to be an affiliate marketer" and put that into the Google search engine there's only 9,960 results. Would I be able to rank for that keyword easily still?

Thanks in advance!

Could I get that confirmed because when I search for how to be an affiliate marketer and "how to be an affiliate marketer" the ones with the quotes really show different results.

The keyword phrase in quotation marks is the more accurate one. It's targeting the keyword phrase specifically, and in it's entirety. When you search for a keyword phrase without quotation marks, Google shows the most authoritative and relevant pages according to the phrase in general. If you look at the first link that comes up, the description says:

"Affiliate marketing is a great moneymaker online. ... Find the best affiliate programs and make money online with affiliate marketing!"

The actual keyword phrase isn't here, but the website is an authority site so it ranks higher. With a lot of work, you might be able to get onto the first few pages. What's good is that this keyword phrase has a lot of AdWords ads to the side, so you know it's bringing in traffic and making money. ~11,000 isn't that bad for a keyword phrase, so I'd say go for it.

Oh no no. The number of competitors tells you only... the number of competitors. The more important factor in competition analysis is the quality of your competitors. I'd suggest you to read Andrew Hansen's recent post about keyword research: I can't post links but you can find it with the search function: just search for threads by AndrewHansen or a thread called 0 to 1000 Free Targetted Visitors In 30 Days - Step By Step.

In addition to Hansen's tips, you could also look at your competitors' toolbar pageranks. Toolbar pageranks are not entirely accurate but if your top competitors had a very small pagerank in average, it might be a keyword worth trying.

      Good luck.

I just ran it through Micro Niche Finder and it comes up with a competition strength of 1 - so yes you can rank for it easily. Doesn't get a lot of searches mind...

You will be fine using that keyword phrase and Mrs. S is right about Micro Niche Finder. It is also a great tool to save you a lot of time and grief preparing your keyword research and well worth the money

I was just using that keyword as an example, I didn't want to give out my real keyword.

As a rule of thumb, i will always look for a keyword with under "10,000" competing websites...BUT...as mentioned above, i will look at competitor analysis...

Are there competitors ranking on page one of google using sites that i can use..e.g. ezine articles, squidoo, hubpages, blogspot, Yahoo Answers, the list goes on...However, if on page one of google, every site is an authority site within your niche, you may have trouble ranking and the same works the other way round too..if a keyword has "30,000" competitors, but page one is full of ezine articles, then i know i can submit an article to ezine and make it more SEO friendly and rank higher!
