1440 Posts Across 15 Months - My Thoughts

OK Boys & Girls...get ready for a ride and let's see what I can teach you here tonight. This is post 1441, and it comes only 40 something days after I made post 1000.

After spending 15 months reading posts and threads and whatnot here on the Warrior Forum and the last 4 months posting a hell of a lot of posts, I've picked up on a few things. Let me share them with you:

Lesson 1: Take Action

90% of the people here are stuck on things that will ultimately not matter. Should I buy a .com or .co or .co.uk? Should I use blue or pink or chartreuse as my background color? Please guys I really need your opinions on the color of my socks! I'm not trying to belittle those people (well, maybe just a little) because I was there at one point myself. In the end none of those questions matter as there is only 1 question anyone will ask:

What are you selling?

If you never actually take the action to get the product in front of people, nothing else you did in preparation will matter at all because you just wasted your time and/or money.

Quit worrying about every single detail!

Take action boys & girls. Buy a damned domain and hosting already. Write your articles or hire someone to write them for you. If you can't design a book cover, buy some Crayons and paper, get your kid/niece/nephew to draw one, and scan it and use that as a book cover. Sign up for AWeber or GetResponse today! (But if you spam me I will hunt you down!)

Don't worry about which WP theme is the boost. Twenty Ten & Twenty Eleven come pre-installed for a reason. Take a minute and play with them and you'll see how powerful they are. If you really want to pay for a theme, come to my personal blog and click my affiliate link for Elegant Themes.

Don't try to decipher the mysteries of Joomla versus WordPress's simplicity or worry about finding 5 bajillion alternatives to Fiverr and PayPal. They're the biggest because people use them. Take a second and think about that! If millions of people use Fiverr and PayPal, why would you want to be anywhere else? Starbucks puts its stores where they traffic is, not out in the middle of the desert with the gila monsters.

Lesson 2: Forget About the List

Every parrot and sheep in this forum will tell you to build a list.

Guess what?

I don't have one and I still make money. Well, that's a lie. I have a list. It has 12 people on it. It's never made a penny for me, but it gives me a reason to spend $20 on AWeber every single month. I like sending out a message to my hundreds of Twitter (@jarycu) followers and 12 subscribers and watching my blog's stats jump once a month. It makes my tummy feel warm.

If you don't understand how to build a list and properly use it, don't get hung up on it. Go build your idea, make some money, and then hire someone who's good at building lists to help you modify things. Don't let it stop you from doing whatever it is you do, though. DO IT DO IT DO IT NOW!!!

Lesson 3: Nothing Is Dead

SEO is not dead. Facebook is not dead (although its stock is headed that way). Article Syndication is not dead. ____ is not dead.

Whatever smart@$$ed trolls come on every day or two and post about the death of something, quit taking the bait and believing them. If you do, you know what will really be dead? Your bank account. You know why? Because you'll be cutting yourself off from an avenue of making money when you believe those people.

Lesson 4: Get Off the Forum Now!

This brings me to my final point. It's nearing midnight (about 20 minutes from now), and I've promised myself I'm putting on my coat and leaving the forum tonight at midnight, so I need to wrap this post up.

Every word you type on this forum or any other forum is one less word that you never typed in your own business. Every snarky comment (and yes, I've made quite a few!), every piece of advice, every anything you type here will help the WF's mission, but it won't help you.

The only thing that can help you is taking planned, considered action in a forward direction in your business.

I'll close with my favorite quote I've ever read:

"Come to the edge," He said.
"We are afraid," they said.
"Come to the edge," He said.
They came, He pushed them, and they flew away.

It's been fun.

FINALLY someone agrees, those posts infuriate me every time I see one.

    "Is PPC dead?"
    "Internet Marketing is dying"
    "Twitter is dead"

I agree with everything you stated except this. Building a list is crucial. Its like saying I do not want to build a relationship with hundreds to thousands of people through simple software. Who does not want that?

Anybody who has been in a relationship knows you do not try to score on the first night you get a phone number and take the person on dates. That is what building a list is like for internet marketers. Yes we try to score and sometimes do but for the people who do not allow us to we ask for their phone number and build a relationship.

Great post. The only reason I came in and said this is just in case any newbies are taking this as gospel. Build a list as you market. Make sure you treat that list like it is your best friend reading those emails. You would not be some sleezy salesman to your friend you would only give him/her the best information possible and recommend stuff you think would help them.

I concur. I agree with the OP in every point except the list thing.

I don't think his ultimate point was to actually forget about the list. I believe the point was to say that you shouldn't hang everything on the list. A list is important, and possibly close to most important, but if it is keeping you from building your business, than it is doing more harm than good.

It is best to incorporate your list building into your business rather than let it hold you back.

I'm not sure Jay was suggesting that building a mailing list per se was a bad thing or that it was something that no one should do.

I think he's saying that the idea you need a list to make any money is wrong. He's saying you can make plenty of money without a list, so don't worry if it's not a skill you have. Find another way to turn a profit.

    That's sensible advice.

      Great post!

Just to be able to write something more than that, here is a quick idea:

You probably have a lot of half-made blog posts, articles, newsletter's etc in your forum posting history.

Take a couple of hours and flip through your posts, and copy every post of yours that has the potential to be expanded into a blog post, article, newsletter or whatever, and copy it into separate txt files.

I did this one evening, and although I've posted a bunch of crap, I managed to gather enough text files to be half done with 52 weeks of blog posts.

Jay. Wow your post near midnight have some bite. Well done though. Most people come on here and get stuck because they just keep asking questions. I have seen threads with please help me as the title. 150 responses and the poster just keeps asking questions and, refuses to take action. Dreams are not made on this forum. It can help you take that dream and make it real. I will say that you cannot do that on the main board and the WSO board.

I am with you...... I do really like my list though : )

Thanks for sharing your post but I also started online marketing without building a list.

I now have a huge list with many many buyers. I find now when I release a new product or service and notify my list I get a great response and make a lot of repeat business.

I know what you are trying to say not having a list you can make money but at the end of the day building a list can help you automate your business and make even more money!

You're correct! I've wasted weeks, even months worrying about silly things. Speculating about something is never going to get us anywhere. I realized that it's better to just go and do stuff, and if I get it wrong, I can correct it later on. That's the mindset with which I'm building my business right now, and it seems to be working well for me.

Thank you JaRyCu. I have observed your wit in several other posts and now that I saw this thread I remembered you - ;-)

I don't think that your 1.440 posts where wasted time - it depends on your words and the content. At the very least you learned how to write quality content and how to deal with a big variety of personalities.

I finish with a sentence that I've read (related to yours):

Every word you type on this forum or any other forum is one less word that you never typed in your own business. Every snarky comment (and yes, I've made quite a few!), every piece of advice, every anything you type here will help the WF's mission, but it won't help you.
I have to disagree with this generalization. I look at it the other way: everything you write on the forum reflects on you, so make it count. You can have fun, be snarky, and even get in arguments, but it ALL reflects on you.

The stuff you post here will most likely help the WF's mission, but it may also help your personal mission. Of course, this assumes a person has a mission to begin with. To say posting on the WF doesn't do any good is short-sighted.

I have made many friends here, have received help when I needed it most, have offered help when others needed it, and felt like a part of a community.

Everything I typed here IS a part of my business (a small, but important part), so they aren't "words that I never typed in my own business".

That being said, I know there are a lot of people here who post at the WF so they can feel good about wasting their time. If those are the people you are addressing, then no problem.

    All the best,
    Michael

Nothing is dead... I couldn't agree with this more, I still see people earning with poorly thought ut methods that were big in 2009. People are too quick to believe what idiots say on forums about niches being 'saturated' or a method being 'dead'. There is no such thing as a saturated niche, there is money available in every single niche you can imagine, some may just be more competitive than others.

I really liked your LESSON 3. People just love telling others that something is dead. They can't make something work, then it's immediately dead. They don't realize how many people they potentially affect through their careless words.

I've always found whether the traffic source or method works or not completely depends on the person doing it. Twist it enough until you get it to work, that's my motto. The problem is, not many have the patience to wait till it works.

They try for a couple of days or weeks, and come and rant about how so and so traffic source is dead and they can't make money from it.

I used to let these kinds of rants affect me. There were times when I actually stopped some of my projects because a good number of people claimed the method is dead. Then, a couple of months later, I took up the same methods, twisted them to fut the current trends, and what do know? They do work!

So people, stop listening to nay sayers. They are everywhere. They get de-motivated easily and they'll try to take you down with them. Don't let them. Pick a method and stick to it until you make it work, no matter what!

Everyone is NOT going to agree with everything. Stop Your A.D.D. Marketing!

That is exactly the point TheArticlePros is making. I see people trying to dissect what he wrote as if there was some deeper analysis.

People, we all have opinions...they are like armpits, we each have two and when I was in the Army, we used the other "A" word because everybody had at least one big one to complain about.

What works for you? Rinse, Repeat....make more money then try other things and don't be afraid that it is not perfect before you take action. Taking action is the key to success...not consumption of everybody's 'me too' products!
