Anyone else have this problem?

Hello Everyone,

I am currently hosting with hostgator and have an issue. Knowing that many of you host with hg, I figured some of you may have run into this issue.

1. signed up with hg using xyz.com domain
2. added 'add-on' domains abc.com and efg.com
3. now when I search google, both add-on domains come up as xyz.com/abc.com/ and xyz.com/efg.com/
4. contacted the chat support at hg, they told me the only way to fix this is to get a reseller account

All I want is for each domain to not be associated with the first domain I used. How do I get around this? Or do I have to find another provider?

I appreciate your help.

Best Regards,
James

You need to have the domains set as sub domains and then create an FTP account for each.
The web site for each domain will be loaded into the original site public_html into a folder with the domain name xxyyzz.com
    Signature

You might not like what I say - but I believe it.
Build it, make money, then build some more
Some old school smarts would help - and here's to Rob Toth for his help. Bloody good stuff, even the freebies!

So what's the deal? When they say you can host unlimited domains you can't have them all as separate? I thought it seemed a bit good for $9.95...
    Say the OP has his 3 domains, xyz.com abc.com and efg.com, he would need 3 different packages i.e. 3 x $9.95?

You can use a domain redirect to redirect addon.maindomain.com to addon.com

        James -

If you mean you want each domain to have its own separate control panel,
then yes - you need a reseller account.

If you are happy having each separate domain being controlled through your
main domain's control panel, then you've done everything fine...

Addon domains simply redirect the request for the new domain to the
content stored in a particular directory on the main domain.

You control and configure any addon domain through the main domain's
control panel, and the files are physically stored inside the main domain's
space, but to anyone viewing the sites they'll be seen as separate domains.

Not sure what you mean by...

        3. now when I search google, both add-on domains come up as xyz.com/abc.com/ and xyz.com/efg.com/
Can only imagine this happening if you searched for "abc.com" and had set
the addon directory it to be called the same name, and Google managed to
index it as that from the main domain (that paragraph worked better in my
        head than written down )

        Best,
        Adam

        PS...
Hostgator support and their forum are always going to be your best
bet for getting your head around these issues.

  • I use Hostgator with no domain issues.

Looks like you need to figure out the options in your cpanel
