Which works better: "$0" or "Free"

Ive been into pricing psychology for a while now and find it fascinating.

I was wondering if i could get your opinion on which works better when trying to get someone to opt in to a list or get them to a specific page?

"$0 or "Free"
#free #works

The opinion of forum members does not count unless
they are visitors to your site and in your target market.

If it were me, I'd TEST it scientifically.

So, you create two versions of your offer (one with "$0"
and the other with "Free") and then you let your target
market give you the right answer every time.

Why guess when you can test?

I have to agree with Shaun on this one. If you want worthwhile and useable results split testing is the only way to go.

I also think that FREE versus $0 will be influenced by the kind of product and which market it is aimed at.

You will most probably find that your results will vary according to the market you are testing in.

"Free" is one of the most powerful words. I'd definitely vouche for using free over 0. Many copywriters love the word free and use it on their sales letters, squeeze pages.

It depends on your market. I would put my money on "Free" being more popular but getting more freebie seekers and %0 being less popular but resulting in more buyers. I would aslo bet that "FREE" would beat "Free" and that "FREE" in red font and larger size would beat them all. But of course, you would have to test, test test.

Free is probably the most powerful word there is in marketing.

    Which is better?

"Buy One Get One For $0"

    or

    "Buy One Get One Free"

    Q.E.D.

In fact, if you add in a few other words it gets even more psychlogically compelling. Try adding "Now" , "Easy", "You" and "Money" somewhere along with "Free" and it gets even better.

Fascinating insights here Chris. I see what you mean: make it personal (You), instant (Now) and rewarding (Money).

Not always "Free" works it is a magic word however some time free feels "not worthy to try" and at the same time Piad or Discounted products works.

See the following prices and determine which one attract you most.

    Product 1 [ FREE] - Product 2 [$0] - Product 3 [ $5 however Free for next 6 month]

It depends entirely on your presentation of the source that linked to your opt in page.

Free and $0 are the same unless when majority of your visitors do not understand that Free means $0 and $0 means FREE.

Better experiment or simply settle for FREE, it's been working and still working.

Free is better for optin rate, but it attract freebie seeker, which is bad.

If you don't want those type of people, use $0

I see what you mean Gina, but, having 5 leads is better than having no leads. Today they might not buy from you but next week they might.

I'd rather have a list of 1000 that coverts 1% than no list at all.

      Lets look at that: 1000 * 1% = 10 Sales * 11.30 per product (random number) = $113.

Do this once a week and you've got a $452 per month income stream!

A test wouldn't make sense much...

      Instead, try something like...

"$37 program gieven to you FREE."

      And test the "worth-value" instead.

IMHO depends on the sales copy. I can imagine a case when 0$ works better.
Let's do an A/B test with it.

Free is better because it's more obvious than $0 which requires people to think - and some people will assume it's a mistake and should really be $10 or something.

Free is also the worst because it has connotations of being without a price, therefore worthless, which will put some "buyers" off.

Bottom line? Test both. Can't tell you how many times I thought I knew for sure which the best wording would be only to find out I was wrong.

The Word FREE gives you full freedom to explain & offer the service/product with some hidden costs, you know lots of marketers today do it very smartly.....

Saying it will be FREE, doesnt means that it will not take any charges in future... But saying the cost as $0, looks little ODD.... I opt for FREE
