Is it a good idea to offer something free on a sales page?

Hi
I am looking for some advice. I have recently started offering something for free on my sales page. This is of course, so that I can build my list. While it's too early to judge if this is having a negative effect on sales, I am very wary that this may be counter productive.
I do see, however, that a lot of marketers have put similar offers on their actual sales page to build their list.

The content that subscribers are sent is high in quality and basically gives them excerpts/samples of the paid product so that they can judge the product's quality.

Has anyone here ever experienced a drop in sales because of having an autoresponder on the actual sales page?

An idea is to have at the very end a note about the product you are selling...

Something like..."Still not convinced...get a free sample here..."

And have a link to a capture page where people can get the sample for opting in. That way, even if they don't buy, you have some of them on your list.

It is all about split testing

Put up a php script on your sales page that rotates between your two sales pages.
Give it a week and see which one has the most sales.

All the top marketers in the world are constantly split testing there sales pages to see what works and what dosen't work.

    Always be testing

Great advice. Can you give this free information out as a bonus instead? Not sure if it would work in your case but people love bonuses!

From a slightly different angle, we decided to have a sale on our website, offering a lower price on one item for a month. The orders have been flying in! We never imagined such a good response from our sale, of course we are delighted. So, next month we'll have a different sale. Quick nickel versus slow dime is how we see it.

    Hi Michael,

I think sales can actually be increased if you manage to do the preselling well via email.

One good example I see online is Ewen Chia's Optin Profits (not an aff link), where he collects emails from the top of the sales page. When one opts in, he will be 1. be redirected back to the sales page to be sold, and 2. be still marketable via email.

This two pronged approach definitely will increase sales.

You only want to have ONE action on a sales page or a squeeze page. If you want people to buy, then just have an order button. If you want to give away something for free, then do only that.

A better way to setup something like that is to have some type of exit pop when they attempt to leave the page that offers them some kind of free sample.

This is good advice. However, I think I read that pop ups are the 'most unpopular' email capture idea to employ. Have you, or has anyone on here had good experiences with pop ups (in terms of sales or even just for growing a list)?

It's best to have a separate landing page that leads
to the sales page, so the sales page would be the
    redirect page after they optin.

If you place the offer on the page itself then simply
make that the redirect so they are not distracted
from reading the rest the the sales message.

I would test the first option though.

It purely depends on your estimated sales. If you do your figures right you should always take into account certain things such as sale drop's.

I have to second what WillR said. You only want to have one action, however, you can create a sales funnel from your free report which will provide exposure to your paid product. So basically, you get customers in by offering them something free, and then you offer them your paid product as a one time offer afterwards.

Test and see. I've incorporated an opt-in box on my sales letter page before, and got about 1/5 of the subscribers i would have gotten if i led them straight to my squeeze page. AFter a 4 month test, with heavy advertising... the squeeze page made me more money.
