Another thread got me to thinking about this, and I'd like some opinions.

We want to start a new online biz, to create our own competition. The name we'd like to use is xxxxxxxx.ca which is available. The closest competition is in California with a name of xxxxxxxxrepair.com. The first two words in each name are the same.

Is it ok to do this? Would it be better to go with xxxxxxxxcanada.ca? Dont really want to use that name, our first idea is the preferred one, but this one could work.

Thanks,
Funkynassau

The only rule I use is how much is the keyword for my domain searched. If there is a good amount of monthly searches I'll buy it.

That really should be the focus. Doing it may surprise you with higher searches each month.
    Which equals $$

Both words in our desired name are searched a lot, it's really a good name for what we do. Hubby's concern is the guys in the US might decide to sue us for such a similar name, tho theirs has an extra word in it and is a .com rather than a .ca.

      Thanks for your reply.

    ok, understood

I did get a call once from a company saying I was infringing their copyright and had to remove the site or they would sue. I did some research and was advised to drop it, so I did.

If there is canada after it it still can lead people to think they are international, so it's a tough one with out being more specific, which I suggest you do not do./ Someone may get the domain if you post it here. Sad, but true.

    Good luck
