What I have learned in 8 months so far

I have been at this for 8 months and felt the need to share a few things that I have learned for anyone just starting out. I will be the first to say that I have made SOME money, nothing significant, but it is encouraging to be able to see that it actually can be done.

I have mostly been a sponge for information and have done plenty of reading on my own on various aspects of marketing and have realized a few things. The first being that after I have bought a few too many WSO like everyone else there really aren't any secrets to generating traffic with social media, article marketing, forum marketing etc.....the real secret is actually DOING something consistently enough to see results. After a while the information all becomes regurgitated and I feel like most people all know the same stuff, it is whether or not they are willing to apply the knowledge that separates those that are successful from the rest of us.

I have created three different websites in three different niches and as I said before, I have succeeded in making money but nothing close to being able to quit my job and live the dream. I do feel fortunate to have learned from each one of these websites, I have learned from my mistakes and they all provided great experience that can be applied in the future.

My number one mistake was not having a clear plan of action. This is what I will be sitting down and doing tonight. I had no business plan, I found an idea and tried it out and then found another idea and tried it out until my websites spun wildly out of control. I now know how to go about finding key words and niches, ranking keywords, creating blogs/squeeze pages and how to generate traffic.

I would consider my last 8 months with internet marketing as "playing around" and learning the tools of the trade. My next venture will be to treat this as a business and come up with a clear business model that I will follow and actually get work done daily. I think one of my bigger realizations was how much work is needed, rather than just set and forget a website.

Some other things that I need to change are my daily habits that are really just time wasters. This forum is a huge time waster for me even though I consider it "educational research" checking clickbank for hops and sales is another.

I am interested to see how many of you actually sit down and come up with a sound business plan and follow through with that plan. What were your experiences?

I have a number of sound business plans, that I actively work on everyday. But it was a very slow process of trial and error to find what I believed to be a sound plan, and what actually was. Given how dynamic an environment the internet is and how major changes in a particular web services for example, Google can have on most internet related business. It is best to have a business plan that can adapt to changes.

A good business plan is a plan that is not totally static in structure, but rather a plan that is designed to be dynamic like the net.

Two of the problems you have listed I think everyone has experienced at some point and I know I certainly have them at this exact minute.

      1) Not planning enough or setting out full plan before jumping in!

      2) Wasting time messing about online rather than getting stuck into work.

Out of the those I think number two can be the most dangerous! You can go a full week without doing anything apart from researching (also known as messing about) things online.

  • I created an actual business plan, but few people do that, and it isn't entirely necessary, as this is a hobby for most people.

if you really want to start seeing good results then you do need to start planning more

i use white boards to write down tasks plan out my days and weeks ahead

as you say one of the main problems is people dont do things long enough before they start getting results, this happens a lot

choose one business model like clickbank for instance, choose one traffic source, youtube for instance and send people to one website (your squeeze page) do this and nothing else for 3 months and i bet you will see some good results

what ever you do just focus on 1 thing only until you see results
