A blogging copyright question

I have a blog about making online videos, I just read an article from msnbc which would be perfect for a post on my blog. Is it legal to place this on my page, or will I get into trouble for it?

THanks!
Matt

    Hi Matt,

Check to see if MSNBC has a policy regarding reprints, as each site is different.

I used to run a blog that would feature news stories from different sources. The way I avoided any issues was to give a brief synopsis of the story in my own words and them link to the originating site.

    All the best,
    Michael

I've found that's the best answer too - give your readers a quick summary in your words (adding value!) then a link to the main article if they want the full deal. One thing - whenever I link out from my blog, I always set it to open a new window - that way I don't lose visitors from the blog page...

Mscherrah, Hello! I'm fairly sure you can use it as long as it is a publice news piece and not an exclusive report or documentary piece. It is always best to check, just email them. The piece will still be relevant even if takes a couple days for you to get permission.

If you do decide to go ahead, make sure you state that in your post and give full credit to MSNBC. Until you find out for sure, I hope this will help your decision making.

P.S. Both Michael and GB are right on about adding content in your own words to supplement the article.

The fair use doctrine allows you to use a portion of the article usually 10% blog quotes and link to the article.. and you should be fine...just be familiar with their T&C
