Do you work more hours in IM than you did in your day job?

When we made our minds up to leave the cold damp UK and move to France while creating an online income I had an image of lazing around in the sun with a glass or three of wine.
Well that does happen from time to time but with my Kindle writing and my graphics business I actually work longer hours than I did in the JOB.

I wonder if that is the same for you. I love what I do but a business is a business and requires working in and on.

I used to but I'm outsourcing more and more and that gives me a lot more free time. Even when I did work 12 hours a day or more, I enjoyed it because I love what I do. Once you find ways to outsource more of your work, it gets so much easier! For a while I just made a point to set profits aside to reinvest into my business.

I.M in my opinion is not about working a lot of hours but spending them wisely and actually doing something. If you spend 8-10 hours doing I.M with no purpose or something meaningful, it's just a waste of time. You can do it only for 3-4 hours but be equal to 10 hours job ..

It is how you spend your time and how you use it to work Smarter & Not Necessary Harder.

Once you get a system working for you it is just a case of adding to that momentum on a daily basis.

You have to stick with one method at a time until you see and know it is working for you.

Then add the next necessary strategy that can help improve your online business productivity even further.

I suppose it also depends on what you are actually trying to achieve and what the best strategy is for that particular business.

Just take action, just do something and do not THINK TOO LONG!!!

This is the #1 killer for people never seeing that initial momentum.

Hope this clears some road-blocks for you & all the best with your future efforts!!!

Oh I have no road blocks. I really enjoy my business and I do not want to ever go back to the JOB lol. It is just that when you first start out online it is possible to have a different view of the lifestyle that you are heading for.
I think what I am trying to say is that an online business takes effort and commitment the same as an offline one does.

It's a very long while since I was in a J.O.B. as an employee - been my own boss most of my adult life but online marketing for the past 3-4 years and, yes, I work just the same silly hours as i did when running my business offline.

I love what I do and don't see it as work. I'm a complete bore on the subject with my family whose eyes glaze over when I go into too much detail about what I'm doing and they can't understand how one can be so enthusiastic about what they perceive to be hard graft!

I worked many more hours at this than I did my day job in the beginning. Not so much now as I outsource many different things to cut back on my hours.

Personally I stil have a normal day to day job (it has great benifits) but, every single bit of time I have free to myself, time that I'm not obligated to spend on something else I work at my online business.

So a lot of time is spent working on it, with that said though it doesn't always feel like work and in the long run you know it will be worth the effort. Do it right from the start and your settled, and besides, building a business is like raising a child.

Hard work and sleeples nights in the beginning but who doesn't want to be a proud parent in the end.

Personally when I was building my business I was working 12 hours per day, but for me it was fun. I enjoyed learning and the excitment of the money rolling in.

Now I work 8 hours per day when I am creating and launching a product but in between that time I only do an hour or so per day to answer emails and that kinda stuff.

I think we all start out that way, working just as many hours as we did on our jobs. I agree with gcbmark20. Stay focused and don't allow yourself to get distracted doing non-productive things for your business. Let your work time be your work time.

Occasionally like that, as you say, business is business, and time is a business that can be converted into cash. So it's very important to make the schedule as soon as possible !

Its a relative thing, sometimes it does involve more hours, more often less however there is one thing that question does not take into account and that is the fact that the hours I do dedicate to IM are done so on my own terms and if I want to go on a trip I do that on my own terms no waiting for everyone to put in for vacation.

It really is a freedom thing but its not for everyone because sometimes you do have to go the extra mile that is what separates the successful from the average in this business.

I do, for sure, but I think it's more to do with working for myself than the fact it happens to be in IM.

I did when i first started. I started in college and would skip class and stay up for 24 hours straight just to make my website work. I eventually dropped out of college, but that's a different story...

Now i spend about 2 hrs a day on my site doing free marketing, and let my paid advertising do all the work for me. Much quicker this way.

I don't know. I think so, yes, but it's different. I never look at the clock and wish that the day had gone. I enjoy every minute of it.

And I can see in this thread a lot of people saying the same: It's about freedom and enjoying what you do.

Such are people's naive perception of entrepreneurship. It's much harder than working for the man (until you scale up and expand), but the independence is what makes it all worth the struggle in the start up phase.

I work more on writing articles for a client, but that's only because I waste the rest of my time procrastinating when I should be working on my business.

In a few weeks I'm making some big changes and I'll start focusing on each one 50/50.

My key to time is outsourcing. Otherwise my "work" is simply following blogs/forums that I enjoy coming to everyday and simply contributing. Ultimately, it depends on exactly what niche in IM your focusing on. If its fiverr and your writing articles, it is going to be hard to outsource all the articles, but if your a webmaster than outsourcing is a must

I am working more than 12 hours but not for IM all the time. I am wasting more time in front of my PC than working... and this is what I am trying to correct....

I'm a part time teacher, but I work longer hours for IM than day job, partly because it has much more potential for passive income (put in work upfront and see results for years) and partly because I enjoy it a lot more.

  • Most home based Entrepreneurs have the "feeling" that they are working more hours than they did at their full time job. (Maybe spending 10, 12, or even crazy 16 hour days in front of the computer) However, out of those hours, I wonder if its fair to say that possibly only 50% or less of that time is actual spent "working" (as in, if a boss would walk into the room, would he/she consider you to be working?
