It was gonna mention WordpressMU and seem that SteelDannon is one step ahead of me. Anyway, WordpressMu really save me lots of problem, 1 click and another site is up.
Remember to set the wildcard to * as well

wordpress mu can help, but if you can run into issues when using plugins for wordpress standard. Mu and standard edition are becoming two different animals.

So, I wish to ask too, anyone have any experience with an affordable central wordpress management tool? I'd like to find something that would permit me to centrally manage updates, plugin changes (99% of my blogs are all the same in terms of plugins), and artile posting and management.

We use tools for Mass-Automation.com for that.
You'd need the following three tools:

Mass Account Manager - to quickly set up multiple accounts where your blogs will be hosted

WordPress AutoInstaller - to quickly install multiple blogs

WordPress Cloner - to quickly copy the settings of a "Master" blog to multiple target blogs.

I am familiar with these tools as well. I've been offering suggestions to mass automation for some time on these tools and they are getting better and better. I would like to see a more centralized tool though. Also something that let's me perform plugin updates just a bit cleaner.

I must say though, the auto installer tool is the bomb for performing backups of wordpress blogs. I'll be posting some videos on this tool shortly. I'll keep you all posted.

Have you looked at Wpmanagerdx.com ?

I understand it can only be used on ONE server at a time, though so might not suit you.

Blog Matrix Pro seems the best, but at $997 is INSANELY priced.

You should really check out Andrew Hansen's "Firepow" product. It has a central dashboard for all of your blogs. There's even custom SEO plugins Andrew's team has added.

wp-hive.com is easier than WP MU. It's a standard WP plugin that allows you to run many sites / domains off of one install. I have it running successfully. The big plus is that your other plugins don't need to be WP MU compliant.

Thanks for the suggestion of wp-hive. But it only works on ONE server, not across multiple servers.

Though the developer recently said:
"Auttomatic (the organization behind WordPress) has announced that Wordpress and WPMU will be merged into a single codebase at some time in the future. There is some speculation as to when / how this will be done, but with this now on the table, it is clear that WP Hive's days are numbered."

So maybe I should just start using WPMU, or wait for the merge....

Does anyone use Wordpress Mass Installer?? It is $25 monthly, but I am concerned that they will not last over the long haul, so all the effort will be wasted. Especially with the coming WPMU merger with WP,.... which might put them out of business essentially.

The software publisher has such weak explanations of their products, I cannot figure out why I would need WPAI if I already have WPCloner?

And does the cloner now do plugin updates better?

I also looked at Blogs Organizer and Blogs Automator at
CheapestWebSoftware.com but it appears that the BO can only manipulate about 10 factors in a WP install, so not really enough control.

Anyone have any other solution??? Surely other people want to manage multiple blogs, on multiple domains, on multiple servers, from one central interface, too!

In addition to this, I set up a bookmark folder. Mine is called "My Sites". Under that, I have a subfolder for each site. In the subfolders are links to the Cpanel login page, the WP-Admin page and the home page of the blog.

If you have a lot of blogs, you could group them in niches or whatever grouping makes sense to you.

  I've tried most of the products which OPs have mentioned, and always go back to doing it by hand, and managing blogs individually.
  
  Automation tools are great -- when they work. When they don't, you can spend hours trying to track down a problem, reinstalling etc, and it's a royal pain.
  
  Basically, I use the method JohnMcCabe uses to manage my blogs. I can open a bunch of blogs in a browser (Firefox) in seconds.
  
  I WISH automation tools work as advertised. It would be great. Unfortunately, you're dealing with servers -- and your hosting company can change what they'll allow with scripts at any time.

I do use Roboform, and highly recommend it. I also use Firefox to bulk load 50 tabs at once with different sites.

However, those assist only slightly.... especially for posting to blogs.

What I, and Frank it seems, are looking for is a more powerful MANAGEMENT tool, not merely a posting tool.

Site Man Pro is also not suitable for me, because it is not meant to work WITH Wordpress, but as an alternative CMS entirely, creating its own blogs, with its own themes etc.

Any other suggestions appreciated!!

I agree. XMarkPro is the best I've seen in my fairly extensive searching. I was so impressed I bought it.

Matt is improving it all the time. Soon you'll be able to add an unlimited # of sites from a spreadsheet (man, am I looking forward to that!!!). He takes user suggestions seriously and he communicates freely. He's on my Skype recent chats list. His customer service attitude is just brilliant.

He did the install on my server (no cost) and I imagine he does that for everybody who wants it.

It's just a one time payment and tons cheaper for me (with 100+ sites) than ManageWP will be when the $5 per site per year pricing kicks in. If you'd like a coupon code to save 50 bucks, PM me.

Setting up new sites is easy. XMP, as I call it, has a WP Repository which holds all your favorite plugins and themes, then when you want to create a new site, tick the boxes to make your selections from the available themes and plugins (including commercial plugins which you've uploaded there - the ones not available at wordpress.org) and it creates the site in seconds.

XMarkPro also checks to see if your sites are online every 15 minutes, and a ton of other handy things.

Yes, it definitely does that. It also supports "domain templates", so you can create a "template domain" with WP installed with all plugins & themes you want. From there, you can login to WP, and configure everything as you want. When creating a new domain, you can optionally select a template, and all the themes, plugins, posts, pages, settings, and everything else will be automatically installed on the new domain for you within seconds. Excellent if you need to pre-configure plugins a certain way, add your API keys, or whatever.
