What is Facebook Edgerank and why should you care

Many people believe that if they get a lot of likes to their pages and if they post a large number of posts to their Facebook pages, their Facebook will explode and they will make a lot of money. It is not necessarily true and most of these people find that the response to their posts and promotions is lacking

A major reason for this lack of response to your efforts is the effect of the Edgerank algorithm that Facebook uses to determine how many people will see your posts in Facebook newsfeeds.

This algorithm was developed in 2010 and it is used to evaluate the affinity (interaction between you and the visitor), weight (likes, shares, comments) and time (the age of your post).

Facebook then uses the sum of these parameters to decide whether your FB page is worthy to send to a newsfeed and be viewed by your contacts and eventually the world, or should it be ignored.

That is why you should care!

It is not difficult to skew the algorithm in your favor.

  • Your Facebook page has to be interactive, that is, people engaging with you and in turn you engaging with them. Encourage your readers to leave a comment on your Facebook post and or ask your visitors to share your post. Make sure to always answer comments.
  • Comments and shares are weighted more heavily in this algorithm than likes.
  • Post interactive posts not just offers.
  • Include a call to action in your Facebook post. Mostly people will take action only if you will ask them to. Ask them to like, comment or share.
  • Timing is important. The greatest spike in Facebook traffic occurs at 7am EST, 5pm EST and 11pm EST. Those are the best times to post.
  • Do not over-flood your page with posts. Quality is much better than quantity
Cheers,

Dita
