Profiting Through Humor

I came across this article this morning, there was a vendor selling "Canned Air" from various countries. They're going for about $10 a pop and $5 for shipping. I couldn't believe it, but it amazes me how sometimes the most simplistic things can create a profit. Clearly, the packaging and print is done ingeniously. I wonder what the overall market value is for people who purchase gag gifts.

I couldn't help but find the following absolutely genius!

A thirty-two page official training manual titled The Care and Training of Your Pet Rock was included, with instructions on how to properly raise and care for one's new Pet Rock (notably lacking instructions for feeding, bathing, etc.). The instruction manual was the real product: it was full of gags, puns and jokes. It contained several commands that could be taught to the new pet. While "sit" and "stay" were effortless to accomplish, "roll over" usually required a little extra help from the trainer/owner. "come," "stand" and "shake hands" were found to be near-impossible to teach, but "attack" was fairly simple (also with some additional help from the owner).

The owners/trainers also found that potty-training their pet rocks was fairly simple, given that they were, in fact, rocks. Dahl's biggest expense was the die-cutting and manufacture of the boxes. The rocks only cost a penny each, and the straw was nearly free. For the initial run of booklets, Dahl had a printing job for a client and "tacked" the pet rock booklet onto the main job. This resulted in a batch requiring only a cut and trim, at almost no cost except some labor.
If Nintendo never arrived with its slew of Pokemon and DS devices... I'm sure kids would still be into the pet rock!

lolol funny, but i still think the guy that sold cow dung in a jar gift wrapped and shipped to the ones you hated would still win for being the most creative. he could take it a step further and use different animals from around the world, after all it is 2012

Sounds so dumb but I can totally imagine people buying that as a unique gift. And back before bottled water became so popular I would have thought it was dumb too

Strange ideas. I hope this will not happen in the future or else nothing is free at all.

This is pretty interesting. Back in the old days, I remember a CP/M COM program part of some utility package. On those computers, if you want to switch programs, say to explore the directories, you'll need to quit and wait for the program to load from floppy again. The COM program would instantly load what's in memory, and won't require waiting for the floppy. It's zero bytes.

I think this is what they call "novelty items", things that really has no practical use or any use whatsoever. :-D

There's quite a market for these kinds of stuff for collectors and those who enjoy just having items that are intriguing, humorous or just downright weird. We could say that the thing really sold here is the idea. Also, novelty items are usually sold on a limited basis so as to augment the interest, price and "collectibility" in some way. :-D
