Good job! It really doesn't have to be difficult. I think most people really over-think things. Simply target products that you can rank for and that you are familiar with. Do those two things and you can focus on creating content (not backlinking) and you can actually enjoy yourself while earning.

Now all you have to do is figure out how to repeat that process for 1000 other websites then you can bank some real cash, its all about finding the right way to reach the buyers.

Some people go a year and never even make one single commission, keep on trying and you can develop a better more profitable model

I build both sites with wordpress, on my own domains hosted on hostgator.

the traffic came from search engines only.

I have google analytics and the traffic came from long tail keywords...

Congrats. Now start working on your next site! I had the same experience with adsense. It seems like it takes a couple months and then things just click and you start earning. Just build and expand and learn along the way.
