Hey I'm new here and I just started an "experiment" at my new blog...

I have been around the block so to speak and I have been up and down up again and down and up...ad nauseum. I decided to really approcah things differently this time...

The following is a post I made at my new "experiment" blog about goal setting and the ephiphany I had while standing at a urinal in a McDonalds the other day...I hope you enjoy and can gain some value from my "ephiphany"....LOL

Goal setting and urinals in McDonalds

You are probably wondering what the heck goal setting and urinals in McDonalds have to do with each other? I was in a McDonalds this morning getting a tasty bacon , egg cheese biscuit and suddenly felt the need to use the restroom.

This particular McDonalds had one of those really cool enviromentally friendly waterless urinals that is supposed to save thousands of gallons of otherwise wasted water each year.

One other feature I noticed about this urinal is that it had a "to scale" detailed ethched fly right in the center of the urinal about 5 inches or so above the urnial drain...I swear I had to do a double take because it actually looked like a real fly....I noticed myself naturally targeting the etched fly as I used the urinal...I got to thinking was this the purpose of the etched fly in the first place?...To give me a target?

I did a little research into the etched fly in urinals feature and I found out that there is a very specific reason why the etched fly was there. Apparently the company that came up with the etched fly idea did studies and found that public restrooms that had these urinals with the ethced flys actually stayed cleaner and smelling fresher for longer periods of time....The reason why? Because there was less urine splash outside of the urinals. Think about that for a second.

Just like I noticed my natural tendency to target the fly as I used the urinal apparently so do other men when they use the same kind of urinals. The company that came up with the fly etched urinals figured out if they gave men a "target" (the etched fly) that they would be less likely to be carless and let the unintended "spash factor" happen which tends to make things less clean and smell bad in a short period of time....

I had an epiphany.... When we set a target or set a goal the actions we take in execution to achieving that goal are a lot more focused, purpose driven, efficient and ultimately "cleaner" with a better end result. Having a specific target is key in how successful you will be....Just aim for a target or goal that you set and things automatically have a more successful outcome...Seems like common sense but sometimes we forget the simple fundamentals...

Just setting the goal (ie target) is more than half the battle to achieving the desired outcome....Just ask the people that came up with idea of etching flys into urinals...

Definitely something to think about....Gavin

Yeah someone gave me the idea to design a Urinal with a clown face and a balloon on it's head that fill up as you target kind of like those old time carnival games....LOL

Hell us "Men" would spend most of our time in public restrooms trying to pop that balloon if such a urinal existed....LOL

          Thanks

I thought you were going to talk about target practice with the urinal cakes.

I have never seen one of those urinals - neat idea.

I saw an email about 5 years ago how some european country used that fly "art" on the urinal because us men would subconsciously aim at the fly... which would reduce the "splash"... hence lowering the number of smelly bathrooms.

I didn't know about the waterless thing... that's pretty cool.

Great analogy between the "fly" urinals and goal setting, Gavin! I am aware of these waterless urinals (though I haven't seen the fly you described on them yet!), and I think they're a great idea as they seem to work quite well, based on my experience with them. Since the urine drainage is passive (as opposed to "active" on a standard flushing urinal) the only fly in the ointment (sorry, I couldn't resist!) is that it is imperative that users shoot straight for the middle, and this is probably why someone dreamed up this "fly" etching to increase the chances of this happening (lol!) I suppose that the fly psychologically goads you into aiming ever closer for the middle when urinating!

By the very same token, when we have goals in front of us (as opposed to just trying to do our best at something), we definitely strive for them and this gives us something tangible to hit. Even if we start with outlandish goals, I think that having them in the first place will encourage us to strive harder and longer to reach for them, and in the process we end up with better results than if we didn't have an initial goal to shoot for!

I have another idea that may work even better. Paint a high contrast bullseye like what you find on the dart boards (but in lighter contrasting colors) in the center of the urinal; I think you're guaranteed to get a lot of on-target "hits" that way....lol!

lol. That is hands-down the oddest piece of psychology I have ever heard, but it makes total sense. And even more amazing that something so simple would provide you with such a profound revelation. Goals are something that everyone should purposefully work toward in all areas of life, on a daily basis, but sadly most people just don't have a clue or are just simply too lazy to bother. It's definitely what separates the wheat from the chaff in almost any situation, business or otherwise. Thanks for sharing your story.
