Where to Get Free Images for Website

Hey everyone,

I apologize if this is an ignorant question -- but where do you guys get the free images that you put on your websites?

I know that you can search for images on Google, but I'm not sure if I'm allowed to just use any image that I find on my website. (Please correct me if I'm wrong.)

stock.xchng - the leading free stock photography site is a good resource that I usually use. It's free and you can find a gem of images in there. You need to sign up for a free account though which I don't think is a biggie.

no, images on google usually are not in public domain, you can not use it on your sites in most cases.

wikipedia has images, you usually can use them, I think. since the site is in public domain.

there are some image datbase in public domain, search it.

I had the same problem so I whipped up a free special report a while back. All images on the sites listed here (Working Webmaster: Free and Low Cost Ways to Create Websites and Get Web Traffic) can be used commercially. Thousands of free images.

I always use wallpaperoom.com for any type of images on any niche....

If your looking for free website pictures you can always get them from Microsoft Clipart and also use Istockphoto.com . There are a lot of suggestions here already for you. You'll definitely have plenty of sources for free images now.

Flickr's stock Photo's are the best imho. No hassle, you just have to link back to the original photo: Flickr: Stock Repository

Here's how you can find a ton of free photos...and legally use them.

Step 1: Go to http://search[.]creativecommons[.]org

Step 2: Check the two boxes for commercial use and modify/adapt use

Step 3: Type in your keyword (i.e. dogs)

Step 4: Click Search

Step 5: Click the tabs (Flikr is a good one for photos)

Now, you just need to brush up on the terms of the license...but you can literally find hundreds of top notch photos this way. Also, it's always a good idea to write down or save the search page if anyone should ever complain about your use...at least you can show your steps...but this really shouldn't be an issue at all.

do you mean Welcome to Flickr - Photo Sharing ?

last time I check it, it is not in public domain. the owner holds pictures' copyright which may get you into trouble.

Nope, you've got the wrong section. They have a new stock section now:

Free Stock photos for designers. You're free to contribute your own photos or take what you need.

As a courtesy to the photographer please let them know how and where you use their images, and do not bundle them in a package for redistribution.

Try doing a google search for stock photos.. Most of these have a good assortment of royalty free images for download.

From what I understand, you can use Flickr's pics but you have to include the photographer's/artists signature.

Getty Images - Unsupported browser detected there are a ton of images you can use on your websites.. though they are not in high-resolution, but the creativity of the pictures on gettyimages has made me its fan.. you get a lot more options at disposal and its really hard to decide which picture to choose.
