Lets set the record straight about clickbank masking url or 301 redirect for tracking your sales

Hi. I know that there are alot of old threads regarding this topic and so much confusion between so many veterans internet marketers.

The topic is: Masking your url with your clickbank affiliate link or using a simple 301 domain name redirect.

Which one is better or better yet, which one won't affect your cookies in tracking your sales commission.

According to clickbank, they say this:

Don't mask or store your HopLink in a frame. For your HopLinks to be properly tracked, they must not be stored in a frame. If your domain is masked, your HopLink will be stored in this manner, and therefore will be unreliable.

For those that don't know what masking is, here is an example:

Say you wanted to promote a clickbank product about affiliate marketing

Lets say chrisfarrellmembership.com

You would buy a domain like this: affiliatemarketing101.com

You would get your long cb affiliate link and do the following.

1. First you go here:
Free Web Start Help and Advice

Where it says: Enter the title you desire for the site "you would enter your site title, I would recommend the actual domain name"

Underneath that it says: Enter the entire URL of the site to be forwarded to
Right here you enter your clickbank affiliate link

Then hit submit

Copy the entire link that it gives you, open up notepad
paste it in there and save it has index.html

Then log into your cpanel
Go to file manager
Click on public html file
select your domain name
Is there are any files in there, first highlight them all
Then hit change permissions at the top
Make sure you put a check in all of then and change the value to 7
Then hit the delete button
Now go to create a new folder
name it index
Then click on it and hit upload
Then click on the browse button and open up notepad and upload the index.html file

That is all

Now when someone visits your site, it will redirect them with your cb affiliate link but your domain name will remain the same

The way to test this is by visiting your site, and going to the checkout page and looking at the bottom of your page and seeing if your clickbank nickname is there.

Now here is the problem,

Even though you might see your cb nickname there, that doesn't mean you will be credited for the sale.

Why?

Because as you read above, clickbank says not to stored your affiliate link in a frame through masking the url with your affiliate link.

That means even though you see your cb nickname at the checkout page, clickbank might not be able to track your link properly therefore you will pay the end results by not getting credited for the referral as an affiliate.

Now obviously you are not going to promote your long ugly affiliate link directly.

So how do we fix this.

Again you buy any domain, .com. info. net. org, whatever, it doesn't matter.

Set your nameservers

Go to your Cpanel and go to Domains>Redirects>choose your domain from the drop down arrow, then at the bottom where it says redirects to, enter your cb affiliate link you are trying to promote.
Hit the add button.

Done!

This I think will work way better than using a mask url to cover or hide your affiliate link.

Now I know I am probably going to here alot of different opinions in here, but I would love to hear from actually successful marketers that can set the record straight and tell me what is the proper way of cloaking your affiliate link.

Masking or 301 redirects?

This would be good to know if you are going to promote a clickbank product offline through flyer advertisement. You don't want to make 1000 flyers and choose the wrong method, then you have no sales and you think no one listen to your flyers while indeed there were alot of sales, but you just didn't get credited for them because you use a frame or cloak your link the wrong way.

So lets please correct this once and for all and say the correct method!

Thank you

No problem, hopefully maybe some experience internet marketers will share the correct method, because this is very tricky and can be the difference between the vendor getting all of the sale or you getting your cut.

I've been using 301 redirects with Clickbank products and also with Commission Junction products for about 2 years now and I've always received credit for sales made though those links.

So you use purchased a domain name and simply used a 301 redirect then and it converts for you, right?

I think it should work. I wonder how much money I lost by masking my url in the past with alot of affiliate links. Hmmm... I am curious if the vendor got sales or how much I miss on if I was doing this wrong for a long time and should haved used a 301 redirect instead,hmmm...

Actually to get the most value out of a domain I buy a domain that is general for a subject, make a home page with content along with several other pages under that. Then I make "somethingdotcom/product" 301 redirects, this way I can make lots of them using the same domain. So and example would be an address like makingmoneydotcom it can be used for redirects for IM products, offline money making products or even job finding products. So you can take this address and make a 301 redirect like makingmoneyDOTcom/internetmarketing and another one that says makingmoneyDOTcom/flyermarketing.

Oh well I guess no one in here really knows. I guess the best way will be by calling clickbank and speaking with someone.

The only way in by trying it out and failing over and over until you succeed and see if 301 works better than masking a url

The problem as described above is that even if you see your clicnkbank id at the checkout page, that doesn't mean you are going to get credited for the sale because you might be braking their rule with "frames"

So is it safe to say that the best way is just to buy a domain name and log into your cpanel and use a 301 redirect with your clickbank affiliate linnk.

          This is what they say:
"HopLinks are an extremely secure and reliable method of promoting products and receiving affiliate credit for sales. However, some affiliates with knowledge of HTML or PHP may want additional ways to encode or "cloak" their HopLinks. Please note that cloaking your HopLinks is not required, as ClickBank HopLinks are now automatically encoded by the HopLink Shield, which provides a great deal of security and protection."

So this means that you don't even have to use link cloaker or bitly or tinyurl to protect your cb affiliate link anymore. It is very safe according to them. Which means you can just put in your clickbank affiliate link in the 301 redirect on your cpanel.

Anyways instead of worrying so much, I am just going to pick out a product on cb which has a proven record, buy a domain for that product, get my cb affiliate link and then log into my cpanel and use a 301 redirect straight to the product. It should work perfectly because I am not using frames or altering the official link that was given to me by clickbank.

Time to take action and stop complicating things. lol

In my opinion, most people's struggles to make any money out of promoting ClickBank products as affiliates have very little to do with failure to take action, and everything to do with not quite understanding clearly the basics of what actually makes people buy ClickBank products.

Absolutely no criticism intended, Ray, but in case it's still helpful to you, I really think you may be much better off having a long, slow, careful read through everything said in the thread you yourself started off right here before "taking action".

Alexa .You must understand that everyone has different methods. Maybe you are good at building a list with loyal customers and make money off that.

But some people are probably not that good at that and don't have time to be studying all day in front of a computer.

Let me tell you a short story. When I was unemployed, I had all of the time to study and put action but I didn't have money to invest. I couldn't afford hosting, buying a domain, etc.. You know the basics stuff.

Now I have been working for around 16 months but I have hardly anytime.
I see so many people in here who have made it and probably sacrifice some time, but not everyone in here is at the same level.

I have a job and it takes alot of my time.

I have made money before promoting clickbank products through offline flyers. I didn't build a squeeze page. All I did was simply buy a domain name and use a redirect straight to the affiliate sales page.

I let the sales page do all of the selling for me. The smart thing is that I only promote recurring products to keep my income coming month after month. The only problem is having a nice budget to buy alot of paper and alot of time to go door to door distributing them. But does it work?

              Absolutely!!

Thank you anyways, you should write an ebook on clickbank as you seem to help people only in that section. Maybe you are a clickbank expert or a list builder guru.

It wouldn't be a bad idea to launch your own wso, Alexa.

              :O)

Yes redirects are fine, but faming it? The reason to frame the URL is to see your domain all of the time, even when it redirects. So would this track ok or not?
Guess I will have to sacrifice $45 to find out,

  • what is the most secure way of making money though? I believe it is the 301 redirect but even with that I heard of people being able to hack the link. I guess that's a chance everyone takes with the internet we would truly never know if we were ever hacked.

I have a question though, doing the 301 redirect how do we add an opt in page or squeeze page before redirecting them to the product?
