Basically start your own following. But if you want to become more socially active... start a forum, drive targeted visitors, do direct mail to your offline clients letting them know about your forum.

The hardest part is starting out and building a following.

You could start off by telling your clients to follow you on twitter/facebook so they can get notified about discounts and special promotions.

Otherwise, why would they want to follow their local locksmith?

Unless you find another angle, and find a way to make them want to see what you're posting. Think funny, quirky, ect..

If this is for your locksmith business, you need to be thinking locally. You should be trying to interact with those who are in your local market. I would start by becoming friends or fans on twitter and facebook to those businesses that are in your area and ask them to do the same. This will help you get some fans and friends to start building up your presence.

From there, you can branch out with facebook by putting up facebook ads to invite customers to come to your facebook page. You can set it up where these are sent only to those in your local area.

I don't believe you can target people in twitter in the same way but you would want to check to see. At the very least, you can start to follow the fans of the local businesses in your area and many of those folks will then follow you. Then, you cut off your list those that do not follow you back and go down this list. This will help you build up your number of fans that see your messages on twitter.

Think up some type of hook for why businesses should want to advertise your services to their facebook and twitter customers. No ideas of the top of my head but see what can be done here where they can help you get your message out. You obviously can do the same for them when you build up your customer base.

Also, find ways to make it fun and social for people to want to come to your pages. You are trying to build up a buzz that will have people want to talk about your business and twitter and facebook pages. These services are social so give them something to be social about and it will help you get your message out by way of them.

Maybe one idea could be to compile community information that your local market would like to read or know. This could be stuff for the local high schools, colleges, new stores opening up, city/community news, etc. Look for services that compile this information and share it with your fans or friends. Basically, find a way to give value to your local market. I would think your goal here would be to build your brand recognition.

start posting pictures of stuff. post those pictures with quotes in them.

and then oddly enough post pictures of what your eating, they seem to be the most popular.

Yes, people LOVE pictures of food or even short descriptions of what's being eaten. Must be the inner pig in all of us

I get the same question from most new clients (in local online marketing).

When I'm speaking to a group of local business owners, someone always brings up Facebook and twitter because their local SEO person brought it up (usually their neice or nephew).

        So, in a room of 200 business owners, I ask;
"When you are looking to buy something locally or find a local retailer...how many do a search on Facebook?"
        No hands ever go up.
" How many do a search on Google or Yahoo?". Every hand goes up.

Do you know the only people wanting to talk to a locksmith? People who, right now, are locked out of their car or home, or want the locks changed...right now. They look on Google Plus Local (formerly Google Places), and the first few organic listings.

This year I joined a panel of "Internet marketing Gurus" to a retail business niche. The daughter of David Oreck (the vacuum cleaner guy) spent an hour talking about Facebook. She had industry graphs, charts, and everything on paper to show she knew what she was talking about. And the audience took notes.

I raised my hand and asked "How many people here, when looking to buy something, look in Facebook?" No hands.
"How Many use Google?" All hands. Amazingly, the next question was still about Facebook....

Too bad we had 5 minutes left for the panel.

Facebook is great to build a group of people who find you interesting...in the hopes that someday that will translate into business. No locksmith on Earth is that fascinating.

Or you can just get the people who want to buy right now. And tomorrow get the people who want to buy tomorrow....

The hard part here is to convince the client that their niece is wrong. So I'll usually say "Of course, that's part of a smart marketing strategy. Tell me, when you do a search online to find....." and I let them talk me into local Google search results.

Buying ads on Facebook is another story. I have actually known people to get results there.

Most people bring up Facebook because they are on Facebook in one way or another. So it's familiar. And it's what they have heard about. And someone on Oprah or CNN mentioned Facebook. So it sounds like something that should work.

But for a local locksmith? Maybe not the direction I would take them in.

I found that liking fan pages that have a common interest with others and yourself is a great way to make new friends and meet new people. Also by joining groups and finding some people that have some hobbies that you can related to!

Agree with all of the above, its vital to spend some time each week, on various Social Media and Forums to build your Social Profile.
Put aside half an hour each evening minimum, and focus on one or 2 social medias that enable you to contribute directly to groups etc
SM like Twitter and Facebook are slightly different as you can continually contribute to these via differing platforms as well as your more organic updates.
LinkedIn, in my opinion, is a fantastic way to pull in alot of highly targetted traffic, if you contribute regularly and of a good quality.
The traffic is there, its always there, it just depends on how hard you are willing to work to get it, because it won't magically come to you.

Offer something on your facebook posts that benefits your community such as discounts for senior citizens. Readers will be more apt to share your posts if they feel they will benefit someone else.

I take part in a lot of industry forums. That being said. I'm not directly selling a product, I sell advertising.

I comment on other facebook pages also in my industry, this draws attention from all of their visitors. I focus on the smaller ones so my comments are more likely to stay visible longer, but not too small so as to be a waste of time.

I'm very Twitter active, using hashtags and tweeting to other Twitter users in my industry, with slightly larger followings, but not too large, so as to gain their audience, but not waste my time with users large enough to be able to afford to ignore me.

The problem with all these SEO guys is that 99% of them are just kids repeating what they read on SEOMOZ and the likes.

    Yes, have a Facebook page!
Yes, have a Twitter account and post often!
Yes, I will get you 1000 social bookmarks posted and 1000 backlinks!
Yes, I will get you 10 articles to post!

    It's all zombie dust.

If you are a local locksmith and have a website selling your services, your Facebook/Twitter will be gathering 40 fans/followers each, which is peanuts and is actually detrimental to your social presence: if I see a fan page with 40 fans, I consider it a social failure, whether it is a silly page like that one of the kid trying to sell his 330k fan page that we had recently or whether you are a serious business and service. An average internet user will see your poor Facebook/Twitter presence and it will subconsciously affect his opinion about your services. You don't see Starbucks FB page with 2000 fans, instead, they have hundred thousands and they do all possible to keep that figure up and growing.

SEO guys getting you bookmarks and backlinks, it's all so 2011. As I say, 99% are all kids who don't even know what Altavista was and who rely on Xrumer and crossing their fingers. 10 articles you say! All outsourced to some guy in the Philippines who has no idea about your niche and spent 30 minutes researching your niche to come up with 10 laughable articles.

Consensus? Tread carefully with those self-appointed SEO gurus. And yes, I know there are plenty of lurkers in this forum who feel identified and know what I am talking about yet are aware that not selling zombie dust won't generate money.

What you should do in terms of social? Become an influencing figure slash authority in your niche. That's SOCIAL.

How you do that? Ask your SEO guru, let's see what he tells you about that (hint: he won't tell you that you will have to bust your butt over a couple of years to be a leading authority).
