Can the previous owner take this domain from me?

I think I am extremely lucky today. I just grabbed a weightloss??.net from someone. The domain has just been available yesterday and I'm lucky enough to register it today. I found the domain while trying to experiment something at namecheap. I just received an email from someone asking me to transfer the domain to him because he is the rightful owner.

The domain has been online since 2002 as recorded by waybackmachine but it doesn't have rank because its already offline during the latest PR update. Another person contacted me just a couple of hours ago offering to buy the domain. The domain has thousands of backlinks mostly from video sharing websites.

All other extensions are not available (even the info, in, co, me, etc)... Am I safe to own this domain?

If you bought it legitimately from a registrar, it's yours to do with as you want... keep it, sell it, give it away....

The only issue would be if it was a Trademarked term, and that is a whole other kettle of fish.

If someone lost their domain because they didn't renew it, well, that's a sad but very common tale, and they can't say they're the "rightful" owner at that point

^^This. If the previous owner keeps bugging you about it, Adie, just keep his or
her emails about that and don't reply further.

Unless the domain name's paid and in good standing but compromised, nobody is
a so-called "rightful owner" of it in spite of one's belief about that.

  • If you registered the domain name and your domain registrar sent you a confirmation that the domain registration was successful, then there shouldn't be a problem unless the "someone" is claiming to have a trademark on the name. It sounds like this person might have let it expire, and now wants it back. Asking you to transfer it back to them sounds wrong to me.

You will probably get more similar answers

    (edit) you already did.

I registered the domain through namecheap without any hassle. I think there are a number of people running after this domain. I myself wonder why the previous owner let this rare domain expired...

And It isn't a trademark, the .com was a trademark but isn't anymore
The .com is not trademarked. The domain keyword is just a normal weight loss short keyword and its not brandable..

Although I am not into buying and selling domains, I consider this one to me the most expensive inside my inventory for non-brandable domains.
