Google set to take on the likes of Gumtree, Craigslist et al

I just noticed this site up and running in 4 african countries Google Trader. I havent seen it mentioned before.

What are your thoughts? Could Google quite conceivably work out the other competing classifieds websites?

Google absolutely can take over Craigslist - they'll integrate the results into main Google search like what they do with YouTube, Google+, etc..

      Interesting. Very interesting.

No doubt certain categories will soon become saturated now it's posted on a large open forum such as WF.

As far as I know, I thought Google Trader is only available in select countries? I don't think it's going to be saturated anytime soon if it's not available to most countries.

Won't have to worry about Warriors flooding it then. I can practically see the scammer factions in those countries licking their lips.

I was thinking the exact same thing

Anybody have any idea why these specific countries were chosen? Possibly there was no dominant classifieds player in the region?

So, in all of this, that's the only thing you see? I am a Nigerian and I see a lot of opportunity for me in Google Trader, such that there will be almost zero competition. Yeah... 'Am licking my lips'

What kind of feedback or publicity has Google Trader received in Nigeria?

Fairly and there were some complains from owners of local trade portals and people stating that Google will crush them. We have sites like tradestable.com.ng, nairalist.com (suspended long before the existence of GT). There was a serious debate Nairaland Forum as to why google would want to come into the business and compete with local trade portals. At that time, I hadn't taken a look at the website. But when I finally did, I saw a huge opportunity for me, something most people hadnt realised yet. There have been thousands of ads posted there by seller, which is a function of the free access.

I saw that I could easily implement what I had learnt here and make a lot of cash for myself.

Its an interesting move from Google and in some ways looking at the markets its targeted rather strange.

Thats all there is to see, really. You as a Nigerian see "opportunity". I see a constant uphill climb for you as you have to go against the negative stigma that a small group of your countrymen has created worldwide. Can you escape it? Maybe. I don't know you and it's quite possible you're a crappy businessman. What I do know is that you can't be foolish enough to think that the negative stigma simply doesn't matter and can be disregarded.

If you're that foolish, you're already dead in the water.

You are entitled to your own opinion but what can you say of Madoff? Is he not an American? I don't care what you think about me. I see you are just one those 'proud' Americans who think they are king in all. You live in a country where man marry a man and there is no wrong in that. You live in a country where a male child just for some reason acts like a girl and his mother accept it as normal and start dressing him as a girl. Are there no scammer in the US?

You call me foolish and where did I call you such? You know what? I am a proud Nigerian and would be foolish to deny my identity just because someone thinks I am not worth anything... And I will make a difference anytime anyday.

Craigslist US is only available to american users, but that doesn't stop millions of overseas posts. Where there's a will (and a dollar or two) there's a way.

And I know what my first post will be . . . .

they have more pull and levels of exposure than any of the local outfits.

Google can absolutely take over Facebook, Paypal, Yahoo Email, and whatever else they started...

But somehow, they have taken over nothing.

It's only in beta and they couldn't possibly survive from ad revenue from those countries alone. 90%+ posted will be from other countries, even if it's NOT allowed.

It could quite conceivably maintain the Beta tag well into being profitable. But I agree with you It looks to be a spam fest already.

Google went after games, but did all the game websites disappear? Google went after Facebook with Google Plus, has Facebook disappeared? Google is just one added competition and not so successful in many fields.

I agree. I think Google can be an added competition but not number 1. They have obviously dominated the search engine but everything else is placed 2nd place.

I think if Facebook implemented a Craigslist style page (in their case app) it could be a serious competitor.

This is like when Walmart opened up in a different area and all of the local businesses went under.
If Google actually flexes its muscle, they'll do some serious damage in this industry. I know that I'll be using Google Trader!

I wish they would try to do something like eBay. I've long said that eBay needs a competitor and I think someone like Google could be THAT competitor quite easily if they tried.

The fee's these days on eBay are extortionate hence the need for competition. eBay has a few ads so it would be easy for Google to implement AdWords into the site to get revenue rolling, so hopefully starting with sites like Craigslist etc may lead to this.
