Fiverr and Expectations from People

Now I realise why it is so bad. I am a fairly popular writer on there. I do have work in other places, so this is more to supplement my income. I love some of the clients, a pleasure to work with. Today I just get the crazy people out though!

1 Guy had me editing his articles for four hours, just minor edits. Nothing more than that, just changing paragraphs around + adding a little content he said he forgot from the original order. He ended up with almost triple the amount of words that he ordered (I think he got around 4,000). It took me 1 hour to write the original articles. So five hours in total. Now you would think, 5 hours, that's less than $1 an hour, but wait, there is more! Once he received the articles he claimed that it didn't pass copyscape, i got a little worried about this (and fairly upset) as I would NEVER take content from anywhere. So I grabbed $10 of credit for premium, run it through, lo and behold. It passes fine. (i think it had around 4 words the same from his source material). Which means in total, for 5 hours of work I had to pay out $5. Which means I lost money working for this client. Too many people expect too much for what they pay, and the thing is, you have to bow to every whim or you get negative feedback and you lose sales as a result (never received negative feedback thankfully)

Today, some guy orders 10 eBooks. Around 6,000 words each. Fantastic! I have 71 orders in my queue. He doesn't want to pay 'extra' as its too expensive. Yet he wants these eBooks delivered in just 2 days, that's right, 60,000 words in two days. There is not a writer alive who would be able to deliver that (not a sane one at least)...that's working 48 hours straight, with around 1250 words an hour.

On top of all of that, I have people asking for constant discounts because they are ordering content en mass. Which I am not going to give them, and yet they insist on it.

So basically people.

If you are looking to go on fiverr, don't! I won't be leaving fiverr anytime soon. It provides me a nice stream of income (which is almost guaranteed) and it is ideal for filling up time when I don't have writing for anywhere else. I also love some of the clients that return to me time and time again, many have outsourced me for even more money than they pay on fiverr (they made an effort to track down my writing portfolio)

So in short, that is my rant for the day!

DUDE - you are worth more than that..

It sounds like you are sought after and enjoy what you do (most of the time) so I would be setting limitations and packages for your customers.

Not sure if you've already done it, but IMO it would be a good way to structure it like 1 gig = max 1000 words, and also 3 revisions max.

As a designer, time is money and you need to set boundaries.

Anyways, you are worth way more than that, setup a Warriors for Hire thread here if you haven't already, get paid for what you are worth!

I agree! you should set reasonable boundaries to your packages. I am a also a writer and I usually specify in all of my gigs the amount of words that I am willing to write for an order!

So sorry to hear about this bad experience you've had. But this is true although i haven't encountered this kind of clients and very thankful about it. Customers should also understand and not expect too much since we worked hard for it. Like for this instance the client gave you a topic or asked you to edit and in the end not happy with your service. The least he could do is thank you and pay you for the service if he was that pickle minded about what he wants.

You definitely have to set boundaries on your gig, otherwise people will try to milk it and take advantage. I do clickable craigslist ads and had to limit ad copy to 75 words max because someone wanted me to do a 650 word ad for 5 bucks.

I let people know that it's going to cost extra gigs if they want something outside of my gig instructions. I don't have a problem canceling orders if they don't follow my instructions. I've found that people will respect you more if you set the ground rules and don't back down...especially if you do quality work.

Most buyers on Fiverr think when they hand you $5 that you are then their personal slave.

I normally have 100+ orders in the queue and the SECOND that one of them starts getting bossy I force cancel.

I totally understand where you are coming from.

I've been there a few times myself and it's usually when someone misreads the gig description or doesn't bother to read it at all. I had someone who wanted me to completely rewrite their content through an old proofreading gig I use to run. Is it really that difficult to grasp the difference between the two?

I've also had requests from people asking me to edit 2000 words of content to gauge if I am worthy of hiring for a $5 gig where the max word count is 500. Seriously?

Ahh! I really hate when the customer waits till last minute to give you the information needed in order to get the gig started. Then when they finally send me the stuff I need to get started I have only a few hours left to finish the gig or else they will cancel it. I have to say it's extremely frustrating knowing that they have that much power.

But to be honest, I think that fiverr has some wonderful people that are always willing to come back or even tip a person. (I dont accept tips) It's just nice to know that when you dont get those customers that are crazy, there are some really fun people who I love to work for and Im always willing to do a little extra for them.

Report these people to Fiverr. They'll be banned.

Neither buyers or sellers are allowed to change the terms.

Imagine how few people would want to sell on Fiverr if it were known that you'd be pressured into delivering 3 gigs for $5 instead of 1. Or that the buyer will pay you directly so you don't have to wait for the money but they'll cut themselves a hefty discount.

Fiverr doesn't want these buyers any more than you do.

These posts about fiverr customers are very true. There most of the clients expect a lot for $5

It always happened in online marketing as you guys are professional, someone who might started working in online industry willing to give 2000 words content for 5$ as they are needy and when need comes anywhere they will do it.. I have only suggestion that work for those clients who have good feedback it will ease your tension and time.

I used to write articles on fiverr but now people try to get an article for free... + there money back. Write the article... send it to them... if they are moaning just tell them to contact fiverr.

One guy said i left grammatical errors.. lol

his feedback was something like "Dis is bad i want moneys bak"

i was like wow! take the money you obviously need it more than me.

My only advice is to be very clear in your description what you do. And what you don't do. And then be very clear in the "requirements" page they get after they order.

Yes, I believe that the cheaper the client (and Fiverr attracts cheap customers as well as smart one), the more they expect for almost no money.

But I've also bought a Fiverr gig where the seller changed the terms of the order after I ordered. The inconvenience was minor, and I gave good feedback, but I won't order from him again.

I still am constantly amazed at what someone will put up with for five bucks.

Yeah, I would cancel at the first sign of trouble from an unreasonable client.

I've had some pretty bad experiences on fiverr too. I would not do the kind of work you're doing for $5 but I have seen that not complying or even asking buyers to cancel or hire you for the appropriate gig will get you negative feedback. Also, if you ever take a break and someone hires you without your knowledge you can get negative feedback there as well.

People should realize you're already getting a discount because $5 is nothing, and you actually get $4. Still some of the things I really like doing, but the system as a whole is not so great. You should be able to rate buyers as well, I think.

That's a great suggestion. Some buyers (I'm sure a small minority) are just poison. I see negative feedback from people I know are competitors too.
