Converting eZine Articles From English to Russian...

...or any other language. Is this doable? Legal? Do I have to contact the author for authorisation?

If yes to the first question, what would you recommend as far as a good online translator?

The same rules apply, regardless of the language they are written in. If you are taking someone else's work, it is stealing. Plus, Google already has translators running, and would see that it is the same content. You could, however, give the proper credit and links and use it as syndicated or curated content for use in, for example, a Russian dog training site.

I'm no lawyer, but I think it probably isn't: that must, surely, be a "derivative work" constituting a breach of copyright?

I'm still no lawyer, but I'd guess that's a very good way forward (and probably much better than contacting Ezine Articles). It's not easy to imagine that (m)any authors are going to say "no", provided their link/resource-box stays there, is it? I'd certainly have no problem at all, as an author, over your doing that with any of my articles. On the contrary: I'd thank you for it.

As always, thanks for your input!

Can you point us to a source for US law that says a "derivitive work" is automatically a "breach" of copyright law?

It is my understanding that, while derivitive works can infringe on copyrights, they can also be changed to the point where they can have their own copyright protection.

Derivative work - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Copyright infringement liability for a later work arises only if the later work embodies a substantial amount of protected expression taken from the earlier, underlying work. The later work must take enough protected expression (it does not matter how much unprotected material is taken, for the latter is open to the public) for the later work to be "substantially similar" to the earlier work.[5

No (which is among the reasons why I specified twice that I'm no lawyer) but Brian Kindsvater probably can, because I've seen him make very similar comments here about "derivative works".

I think nearly the whole forum has seen for a couple of years how much it apparently means to you to pick on my posts in an attempt to find something to quibble about, but you're surely not seriously suggesting that just translating someone's work into another language and publishing it, as asked about above, wouldn't constitute a breach of copyright, are you?

Please excuse the observation that even by your standards of "challenging" as much of what I say as you possibly can, entertaining though your comments often are, this one is surely scraping the barrel a bit, even for a Friday evening?!

Have a good weekend, Kurt: try to relax a little.

Translation is no difference from copying so No, It's illegal.. You have to buy foreign language copyright if you are to translate a book (if it is a book and same applies here)..
