"With the latest Google trends, I'd recommend this..."

"Google frowns on (insert marketing technique). I wouldn't do that."

"To get more love from Google, I recommend altering your content in (this) way..."

Browsing the forum the last few days, I've seen countless responses to various questions that contain phrases similar to those listed above.

I understand that Google is the largest search portal in the world and they have all the traffic, but it still blows my mind how readily people are to tailor aspects of their business specifically to Google.

I mean, I was browsing here during the last two major algorithm updates and the tsunami of "Traffic down 80%... help!" type threads was astounding.

I don't claim to be some hot-shot Internet Marketer who knows all (in fact, I readily admit quite the opposite), but I find it to be an oxymoron for internet marketing entrepreneurs to be told how to run their business.

Didn't most of us/you get into this to be your own boss? Why would you ever let Google tell you what you can or can't do? Why would you let another company (who has no interest in your financial well-being, what-so-ever) dictate how you build your sites, format/write your content, determine the advertisers you use, determine which advertising techniques are "allowed", and so on.

Isn't one of the key aspects of a successful business that it doesn't rely on outside influences to grow & thrive?

Maybe I'm naive, but I just simply can't see myself spending years of time/energy/money building a business (or any aspect of that business) that heavily relies on a 3rd party to survive.

Just kinda rambling now, I guess.

What are you thoughts, Warriors?

You will always need third parties to run a succesfull business. Being it Google, Facebook or your local newspaper on one side, and customers and followers on the other side.

Still I agree that the Google craziness has started to get out of touch. Still I need traffic to my website and google is one of the largest sources. Later I have started to diversify into different traffic sources like social media. This way I can keep some of my income if Google should harm me in some way.

No - many people got into IM to try and make some money - they don't care how and will do anything that someone else tells them will make money.

The problem is that most people have crap web sites that no one is going to revisit on their own free will. They either get visits from Google searches, or they don't get visits at all.

Regardless, we all rely on someone/something else. I rely on Paypal and G Checkout for payments, etc.

I didn't mean to imply that people should try to survive without *any* 3rd party services (like hosting, payment processing, email marketing providers, etc). It's probably a wise idea to have backup plans in place, for all of these, to easily switch service in the event of a disaster.

I was more referring to the custom tailoring that goes on in peoples' businesses specifically for Google.

People are always into what's happening in unison. There's this on-going Google craze and that's where the crowd is at this point. Let me give one concrete example. We have been operating our writing services for years and the ratio of clients talking about their wanting of being on top of non-Google search engines is perhaps at 1/100.

Almost at 99 percent, they're all telling us that they need a content that will place them on top of Google's first search result.
