Ok folks, I'm going to spill the beans on one of my "tricks"

Here is a an easy domination trick. ( wow, sounds like a great product name ) anyway, watch the t.v. or better, if you go to the movies, keep an out for any new releases coming soon.

Any new movies coming out will be announced and hyped for at least a month in advance and when you see one rush home and get on Blogger and set up your new free Blogger blog about that movie.

Add some pics and make it look cool and relevant to the movie trailer.
Use any colors, action scenes, and anything that looks like it is from the movie.

An example would be a "date movie" go find some royalty free pics of folks that look like the leading lady and the leading man and create your own little "movie poster".

Now go find ANY products that would even hint at something that could be related to the movie.

Try to find a way to write your first post on what the movie is about and how excited you are to see it.

Add your "Google Gadgets" around the movie topic. In this case, "Dating".

Try to use "keywords" that the trailer uses. "John and Mary do not know each other, but they soon will". Sprinkle your posts with the movie title, the subject of the movie, and the movie "keywords".

Do you see what is going to happen here? Good.

    Thanks for the post MAtt.

I guess you have left some part to figure out on my own, so let me try.....By "Google gadgets" I guess you mean optimizing this blog using keywords related to dating niche. I guess I'm not way off the mark here!

Google Gadgets are the Blogger version of Widgets. Little apps that you can add to your blog.

When you are in your Blogger Dashboard go to "layout" then you will see your blog outline and some of the boxes say "add Gadget".

You can then add Adsense, Youtube, RSS Feeds, and so on.

I was suggesting that you spice up the page with stuff that you already have available to you from Google.

When you place the Video app on the side it will display videos surrounding the topic.

So in our example of dating, there would be videos about dating.
Don't use "Movies" as your keyword. You want to keep this tight around the subject of the movie.

Whatever you add to your blog should be about the topic and sprinkle it with the name of the movie.

"In John Meets Mary, they find each other through Speed Dating". "I have a friend who went Speed Dating once, here is her experience...".

Use a conversational tone and this is more like a Social Blog not a commercial blog.

You want people that are searching for more info about the movie to find your site, (which they will since you have the jump on everyone except the movie studio itself) then using Social Media sites it starts to spread.

If you keep it non-commercial you can Tweet about it, Squidoo, ...

    Great idea Matt,

This just screams 'NetFlix' affiliate program to me... even after the movie isn't in theaters anymore, they can surely rent it... through your NetFlix affiliate link...

Jared, right. Also you can see that you are going to have the same "age" as the movie, or darn close.

You keep writing about it and even after it is out and on the shelves you are still one of the authority sites on this movie.

Now, what if this movie becomes a huge Blockbuster?

As the movie grows you grow.

Maybe bigger if they don't know how to market for the Internet.

Brilliant! Being in tune with the pulse of the 'trends' when they start so to speak clearly has huge potential.

I didn't think of being the same "age" as the movie release... that's cool.

This can be done with anything that you can get a head start on like using Popular Mechanics Magazine and looking through the "New Trends and Products".

If you see a product that you think is going to be great, then do your blog on it.

I suggest using Blogger because it's free to "test the waters". If you see something that is definitely going to take off or you have a strong feeling about it then go ahead and get a domain name.

When you do the movie "fan site" you don't want to look commercial and professional.

OOOPs....I must be sleeping at the wheels (as its 7 Am here). I did thought you meant adding Adsense to monetize this but then early morning blues got me

No I wouldn't add Adsense to it right away. Keep it more a "fan site".
If after the movie is released and it starts getting big hits then if you want to go ahead.

    Mathew, thanks for the idea....

Question: You say in the first post to find some related product and I assume add links to it on the page. Later post says don't add Adsense right away and keep it a 'fansite'...

....so, should you even add affiliate links or if so, when ? (otherwise how do you make any money from this approach?) If you wait too long, it seems to me the opening movie will have dried up by the time you are trying to monetize. Thanks.

Also, be one step ahead of the competition and guess the keywords people will be searching for.

While in a months time your competition will be using keyword tools then trying to rank you'll already be fully indexed

    Bruce,

I wouldn't add Adsense in the beginning because there is no competition yet for the movie so any ads are going to be for the movie related "theme".

In my "Date movie" example that would mean the ads would be for dating and why do you want to send them off right now when you can be selling them the same stuff.

So this brings me to the selling. Soft sell or actually "pre-sell" from your posts and any ads should look like something that just comes with the blog.

A little block talking about "Acne Cream". A small banner for "New Trendy Shampoo"...

You want to think in terms of a "theme". The movie has a theme and you want the blog to follow the same theme.

When I mentioned Adsense that is something you can consider doing once the movie comes out and if it takes off like a big blockbuster and the traffic becomes huge then you can decide if you are going to make more from your affiliate products or the clickthroughs.

Just go to Myspace and start looking for some of the movie fansites to get an idea but don't assume that all of those are marketing the right way.

Just look at them to get an idea and then use our marketing knowledge here to make it profitable.

      Matt,

This is actually a great idea. It's one step "before" going to look at google trends. Google trends is what people are "talking" about now ... whereas, what you are suggesting WILL get people talking (grabs them before it becomes google trends material).

Thank you so much for sharing! I'm sure a LOT of lightbulbs have gone off in the heads of those reading this thread.

You can actually find out about upcoming movies long before they are advertised. By the time they are actually promoted it may be too late.

      Ron,

Yes that's true. I guess I should have stated that this was one of my "lazy" ways of coming up with an idea. Or actually, letting it come to you.

Sometimes when I'm out shopping with my wife I can't help but see things and think "how can I turn that into a blog"?

The weekend that decided who the two teams in the Superbowl were going to be I jumped online and got two blogs started "SteelersbeatCardinals" and "CardinalsbeatSteelers" and I was going to put some links to sporting goods sites but was too busy with other things that I never developed those blogs.

To take your idea to the next level and really be ahead of the curve, keep an eye on Daily Variety, especially their "Top Stories" where you can see what deals have just been completed such as this one...

What I like to do, and I'm revealing some tricks here, is to check out Google Trends as well...gives you the latest search hot topics are...you can plan blog posts in concert with these as well. I've actually done this for presales of Nintendo Wiis through linkshare.

The problem that I have found with Google Trends is that by the time it hits Google it's too late. That's just me.

Because the truth is it really isn't that hard to see into the future. Or predict events.

Like my Superbowl blogs I talked about above if someone right now wanted to they could work out all of the possible NCAA championship matchups and have a blog already in place with the two in the Championship Game already "predicted".

When I want to work on the future I just go to the local library and find a table and then you can sit down with all of the magazines that review upcoming products, movies, music,...write those down and then I come home and do the affiliate research on those and see what's there.

I go to the library because it's so easy to get distracted online when there are so many neat links to click on.

A great way to do this would be to look into movies that are in production ... IMDB any well known actor's name and then you will see the latest projects they are involved in.

      Matthew,

      One proviso about forthcoming movies.

I actually did a similar thing to you a couple of years back but bought a related domain name to a blockbuster movie in production.

When they released the movie, they had changed the bloody name!

    Great idea.

I think this would work really well with kid's movies. Once the toys & other merchandise come out you can have all sorts of affiliate sales roll through.

  • If you use google trends look at the trends from 50 and on.Then find a upcoming trend such as a holiday etc , then you can determine if it is going to get more popular or just drop off.
