Traffic Catch-22. Need suggestions.

Hi,

I have an idea for a web site, but the idea really only works if the brand new site is getting traffic at launch. You see, I want to involve other people in the site, but they aren't going to want to get involve if the site has zero visitors.

It's kind of like the Appvent calendar. He needed people to participate, so that he had apps to feature, but people wouldn't want to include their apps if the site didn't have any traffic.

Does anyone know how Appvent calendar got traffic in the beginning? Do you have any suggestions that might help?

Yeah, but it isn't that easy. Just because you create an Adwords ad, that doesn't mean that anyone is going to click it.

Do some pre-launch promotion. Build up some hype so when your site goes live people will want to check it out.

You solutions is huge campaigning using your local medias. It will cost you a lot but you will get huge real visitors as well as you can buy some traffic.

Hire a SEO guy as well to ensure getting some visitors from search engine. Hope this helps...

Fake it 'til you make it. That's how some of the highest traffic social sites on the web began. Reddit, with its over 2 billion page views a month, began with one guy having conversations with himself from dozens of accounts, until there were enough real people that he didn't need to fake it anymore. Make your site look like it's got lots of activity already, and the new visitors will want to participate too. They're not gonna run to Alexa and check traffic estimates first.

This is something like starting a forum. It's a catch 22 too. What Dan mentioned above is something that alot of people do to launch their forum.

But consider paying for traffic. I'm confident you'll get clicks from Adwords and Microsoft Adcenter if you have the right keywords and a good ad.
