Partnering up with other sites..

For those of you who operate authority sites...when it comes to partnering up with other sites that are in the same niche..... do you guys just set up a link for each other on your sites for free and go from there?

If one site is much bigger (more traffic, authority etc..) do they generally expect $$ in return?

I am looking to approach a site but not sure how I should go about it. I cant really explain in great detail but I would like to add some of their content to my site as a feed for a certain section.

Do I even need their permission or is it just good practice to contact them and try and build a relationship? I would like for them to add a link back to my site eventually but right now...they have alot more authority than me so I'm not even sure they would be interested.

If you are thinking of RSS feed, I don't think you will need any permission at all. As for the backlink, it will be dependent on several factors, such as whether they like your site etc.
It is definitely better to build a relationship with the blogger first as I don't think he or she will link to you for no good reason.

Yes...more of an RSS Feed type thing. Im dont care about a backlink from them. They have content (interviews and such) that I think would be a good addition to what im doing. I do want to build a relationship with them as well as a fews others that are in my general niche just for the future but I dont want them to feel like im stealing content or anything.

You may want to check out my Trends page on my blog which is done with RSS feeds. Can easily be done for free.

Normally, RSS feeds will link back to the blogger and it will also contain their name/website, so I don't think you will need any permission. But if you want to be sure, you can just send the bloggers an email asking for permission.
