Email vs Social marketing (sigh) Infographic

Anyone who knows me is aware that I view the entire email vs social debate as being primarily hype driven by agendas. My opinion has always been that anytime two humans interact, it's a social interaction. To me, email was the first social network and is simply another social channel. My experience has been that consumers don't make the kind of distinctions on channels that marketers do and intuitively use the ones which suit them at any given time for whatever purpose they have.

That being said, each channel does indeed have it's strengths and weaknesses and marketers have to think about that, like it or not. I prefer to be more granular and look at each individual channel, but a larger view such as in the infographic below may be very handy for IMers so, I thought I would share it here. I would think that most of us probably agree that internet marketers need a combined arms (channels) approach.

I noticed the abscence of ROI for social media in round 2. Social media is just a buzz word for most corporates/business that are spending money blindly just because well, haven't you heard about social media? we need it.

Good point Matthew. The bandwagon effect is definitely part of the problem. If your just doing social for the sake of being hip, you're in trouble. There has to be a plan.

As Yogi Berra would say, "Deja vu all over again."

People used to ask "do you have a website?"

Now they ask "what's your website?"

People used to ask "do you have email?"

Now they ask "what's your email address?"

Heck, people used to ask "do you have fax?"

Now, they just ask for your fax number.

This is a great infographic. Like you, I dislike the conversation about email vs. (enter new fad). Email is tried and true, it's not going anywhere anytime soon. Wish people would just drop it.

Agreed. I'm sick of the debate as well. But guess what's killing that whole discussion? Smartphones. Yes, smartphones. Mobile marketing is re-engergizing email marketing, if you do it the right way.

I'll be doing a talk on smart email marketing for smart phones at the Warrior Live Event in Orlando next month.

    • "Little or no cost" for social media?

In what universe would that be? Any time that has to be devoted to writing updates, planning campaigns, gaining followers, running contests, etc. is time that could have been spent, at a minimum, as a barista at Starbucks.

There is a real opportunity cost to social media. On an hourly basis, social media is one of the most expensive forms of marketing.

You pounced on that one as if it were a three legged mouse fLufF!

It's one of those misconceptions which just won't die. How often have we had conversations here about the time sink which is FB or Twitter or Forums or whatever channel you want to mention?

Good marketing just takes time and effort, regardless of the channel IMHO.
