They have investors. They're not generating income. I think that's what the OP meant.

I think they suck. Unlike any of the big names we already know and love, like Google, Twitter isn't serving up anything like static web pages of information *yet*... it relies on keeping lonely people with time to waste trying to grab the attention of other lonely people with time to waste for as long as possible.

It makes no sense to advertise to them too much which will take them away from their tweeting. One of the better uses is probably already happening behind the scenes... where Twitter will DATA MINE the kinds of things people talk about in real time and sell it to advertisers who can then tailor their ads to how people REALLY think in REAL TIME.

Yep the YouTube business model. There have been other great sites offering cool services that were not making money so Google buys them. Like FeedBurner, You Tube, and others. I'm sure someone will snatch up Twitter soon.

I'm also thinking on that scenario and they are just collecting more members for future sale or update their system to make a good community hang outs.

Be careful clicking the link that MandyG posted. It just spawned a ton of IE windows locking my PC up. Don't think there was a virus - but be warned.

Could be youre infected with adware that just triggered ads because of something on that page because I'm in IE and it worked flawlessly for me.

Hmm - I check my PC regularly and think it's clean. Behind about 3 firewalls too. I'll investigate. All I know is I had about 50 IE windows suddenly open . Must just be me then if everyone else was ok with it.

Apologies to MandyG if I offended, just being cautious.

            Hi Loz

Ha! No. 2 hardware firewalls and one software one. You can never be too careful.

I am relieved that you got the same problem, in a way. At least it means my PC is probably clean. I've done a full virus and spyware scan since and all clean.

Then you don't need the other one (hard ware), it's causing conflicts that can lead to having your pc taken over due to the same ports being open used by the hardware device, and when both try to access the port, it conflicts and shuts down that port.

only use 1 hardware firewall and one software firewall.

They just raised $30 million in their first round of venture money.

You can bet that the business model is forthcoming.

They're not YET. I think they'll continue to just build their userbase in the short term and then, when they're mainstream, implement their money making model. What will it be? No sure...maybe they will send sponsored tweets to users?

I thought Google already tried to buy them? Or was that Facebook? All I know is they turned down a huge sum of money.

Maybe after the traffic growth into certain level, they will open up some advertisement spots.

Twitter is still in the process of figuring out how they are going to monetize their service and to my knowledge, they've been really at it since last year but the implementation stage is apparently only just beginning.

I was just reading this morning (from a tweet incidentally) that the latest growth rate statistic of Twitter is around 1000+%. Mashable covers this here:

Twitter Now Growing at a Staggering 1,382 Percent

I'm pretty sure in the coming months we'll see an explosion of new Twitter features built in as well as monetizing implementation as their upward growth rate continues.

  • They are not making any money and yet Facebook put out a bid of $500 million+ to buy twitter......even though they have no revenue.

I'm not sure what their revenue model will be but I REALLY hope it doesn't dramatically interfere with their service :p

Has anyone here started their own "Twitter Clone" yet? I've been seeing them pop-up left and right... the software is readily available... is anyone here capitalizing on this phenomenon?

I dont think they are making money, with all the work they're putting in, they're only getting a few $$ from Advertising, if that at all. Google - Buy Them!!
