Somebody is copying my entire website EXACTLY!

You could start by entering the domain name here: Whois Lookup & IP | Whois.net
And see if it shows you anymore information on who the registrant of the domain is, and also which company hosts the site. Try that first and see if you can take it from there.

Yes I had this happen at a company I was working at. We checked Whois found their info & called them. Then sent a cease & desist letter. It worked the site was taken down - it helped that they were in the U.S.

I did...apparently it's some person or host in China.

You mentioned its a sales page. Is there a payment option? If so, try contacting the payment provider that they are using.

Is your site hosted by wordpress? They have a copyright plugin that you could install that would not allow people to copy any content or images from your site. Unless someone knows how to hack it of course. =/

I see why some people upload their whole sales letter in the form of an image.

Assuming there is direct copying of significant text from your webpage, you can have this other site removed from Google by filing a DMCA complaint with them. That'll help even if they're in China so you can't go after the site directly.

Unfortunately this happens all the time. I have had the same exact same thing happen to the first sales letter I ever wrote. I was a little flattered actually lol.

In any case, yes a cease & desist letter should do it.

Another thing is...it's not a WordPress site but built on Dreamweaver simple html site for a simple sales letter.

Why is there traffic coming from it to yours? I guess you used the full urls in places?

Since they left those in, and if they haven't set up some way to make money for themselves, it's probably just kiddies playing around.

Fill out a DMCA form and send to their HOST to shut them down. Also, contact his domain registrar

Hit them where it hurts. Emailing the owner of the site (who's probably hiding under whois privacy anyway) will just lead to you crying up the wrong tree.

is that I just updated my site completely, and I immediately check this exact cloned site of mine on its domain, and I'm shocked by how it's all of a sudden updated as well!

At first I thought, they were simply copying and pasting the code from "View Source" but now I think it's somehow connected to my site and his.

Are the copiers selling the same thing you are? Do they have a payment option?

If they're not profiting from your content, and you're getting traffic from them, it sounds to me like you're getting ALL the benefits of a Super affiliate without having to share revenue with them!

FYI, if there is identical content on a separate url, Google reads it as SYNDICATED content as opposed to DUPLICATE content. The difference? No penalty.

Why anyone would go through all the trouble of copying your website and getting you traffic, I can't say. Prolly just Kids Playing around as Buchinski says.

That would explain the whole weird fact that the clone auto-updates off your site. Possible kiddie hacker bragging rights exploit.

I don't get what the problem is here.

It sounds like someone just put your site in an iframe (their URL gets loaded but shows your site) and the reason you're getting all the traffic is because it's your site that they're showing to people.

In this case - they get no benefit and you have no down-side, so why are you worrying about it?

Rather than just worrying that there's something you don't understand going on and thinking it's bad - why not just look at it this way........

What negative impact is it having on your site?

Sounds like nothing - except increased traffic. If you're ok with that - where's the problem?

You don't seem to understand the technical stuff, so all you really need to care about is - do people that go to this other URL still get to your payment button / signup page?

If they do - you don't have a problem, just a lazy promoter.

If you opt in on 'their' site do you get the subscriber?

One of the problems that we usually find in the world of Internet marketing, is that there are many people who steals the content without at least giving a back link to the original source.

Apart from this, copying content and posting it on another website is not going to help anyone.Search engine will slap you because of duplicate content issue..

But that's another story ...

How to prevent your content from being copied.

There are several options ... ....

And a very interesting ... is this:


Step 1 If you have a Non-wordpress website but still want to prevent people from selecting any part of the text from your website, you can do so by posting a small Javascript code in your post .

Step 2 With an image editing program, create a small transparent gif with no height or width. Keep it under a name for example thief.gif
Then insert it into your post. One option is by using this code:

<img src="http://www.yourdomain.com/thief.gif">

Step 3 When thief copy the contents, they often do by copying and pasting the content of your post. Without knowing it .. also copied this transparent small pixel ...

You just have to upload to your server another image named the same, but instead of the white square, will be for example :





What effect does this have? Well automatically, the white square in the post stolen, become an embarassing large image ...what a shame !!!

As an update, I type in the domain url for my site...and instead of having my site come up on Google, this copycat stealer is domain is coming up top of Google.

The problem is this person is using some redirect on a domain name older than my domain.

My idea would be that first you should assess whether it is helping your sales/profits or if it is eating away from your profits or causing you any harm. If it is helping you profit - then maybe you might just ignore it.

If however, it is causing you any harm or affecting your profits, then you could probably contact Clickbank or whichever affiliate network you are using, and they could probably cut off the guys commissions. I know in Clickbank it is against their policy for promoters to be using such methods for promoting. If your using a different network, maybe your network could also help you out - try contacting them and asking them for help.

If the guy can't make any money, there is no reason for him to put any effort to maintain and keep his site alive.
