Are jokes duplicate content?

Hi, quick question that just crossed my mind: I have a joke blog that has alot of jokes listed on the website. Many of the jokes can also be found on alot of other websites, as the good ones are often shared between sites. But does google think of this as duplicate content? Because that means over half my site is made up of duplicate content.

Thoughts?

Yes, of course it's duplicate content.

But why are you worried about it?

Lots of content appears in lots of places around the web. It doesn't get you penalized or anything, there's nothing wrong or illegal about it. You just might not rank well for a certain joke if another page with the same joke has better PR. Google will try not to show duplicates of the same content in the same search result page.

Pretty sure I heard Google announce they will be adding a joke detector to their algo. I might be wrong, though.

Penguin update... Joker update... where's Batman when we need him?

It would also depend how much of the content of the joke is duplicate. If there is introductory text or several different jokes on the same page that would mitigate it somewhat as Google would see added unique text that presumably ads value.

So I should add a little customization; witty opening before the jokes; not a bad idea. All it's says is "type of jokes" then they're listed.

Actually, your entire site is duplicate content!

Every single word any one of us types in any site we own is duplicated somewhere in the Interwebs. Unless we throw in words that we just make up. But, somebody, somewhere could have made up that word too, but I digress.

The question is not whether we have a duplicate word, or a sentence, or a paragraph, or even whole stories, like news curators, but whether or not we are penalized for it. Generally not, as I understand it, if the content is from different sites. However, I would want to make sure I had permission to add anything that wasn't my own stuff, copyright issues, all that.

It's not enough to want it... you have to want it enough.
