Want to make local review website

Any ideas if there is software out there that helps me do a review site for local restaurants or anything?

I'm not a programmer and have no idea where to start.

You can always use a blog. No programming needed. They're pretty easy to set up & every time you add a new review, you will have the SE's visiting your site - which helps tremendously with your SE rankings.

I was toying with this idea...but thought that posting or having a negative review posted would alienate a potential local business.

Do you want to do a review site or an advertorial site?

If you want an honest review site, you take the chance that you or someone else will have a less than stellar experience to report.

Even then, it doesn't have to be a disaster. It could be a good thing for the restaurateur, as a blog with comments gives them a chance to respond to bad reviews and manage the damage.

Everyone has an off night, so a site filled with only glowing reviews might lose some credibility with the readership.

If you check around, some of the most powerful reviewers out there go to great lengths to maintain anonymity so that they don't receive preferential treatment.

If you want an advertorial site, set up a blog and sell good reviews. Ask the operator what menu items they want to push (usually the ones with the highest margins), and write about how great that dish was when you ate there. Charge for the ad plus a comped meal so you can write your "review"...
