Whats the difference between a Cloudfront and an S3 account at Amazon?

Okay technogeeks... what's the difference between the Amazon Cloudfront and the Amazon S3 accounts and do I need both?

    In a nutshell your normal S3 account is hosted in one place and the cloudfront then takes all your files and dumps them on servers in your area making the speed faster. So if someone accesses s3 file in Hong Kong it draws the file from the server there instead of the main s3 site.

    Not really much good to the small IMer but for large corporate customers reduces latency.

    Thanks Quentin for that explanation. I am putting together a membership site with a sh*t load of videos and didn't know if I needed the Cloud too.

    I have an S3 account and that is working great but today I saw others talking about Clouds and wondered if I needed it... From your explanation I think I'll pass on the cloud for now!

    Mike,

    Cloudfront is great for freeline content because it brings the files closer to the user as Quentin explained. The bandwidth for Cloudfront is also a bit cheaper.

    However, it is NOT good for membership content as you cannot adequately protect your content.
