Can blogging still make you money today?

I am considering writing a blog focused on video games and entertainment, and making money off it from AdSense + YouTube.

Can this still be an effective way of making money?

  • Hello Tony,

Of course a blog can make money for you. The problem is the most people don't share how exactly, they give vague answers.

We use our blog to gather traffic from where we can funnel them to wherever we like, for example:

If we get a thousand visitors a month, they all come to the same place. Now for instance if you want to make money you can send them to sales pages or membership areas or place affiliate links etc.

In the end you are the conductor and you decide where the traffic goes as long as they are on your network. Of course there are more ways to convert traffic into money like adsense, but the problem with that is that you are not in control of the advertisements and you can not control the offers in your niche. Thus less money for you, it's less targeted.

    Hey Tony,

Instead of me providing an answer to your question, please allow me to join you in asking our fellow Warriors about making money through blogging.

I wonder, is making money through blogging similar to selling Amazon products on your website? Reading the posts above, one said that through your blog, you will redirect visitors to affiliate links.

Please shed some light on me. Thank you.

Yes, you can make money through blogging but don't focus on the autoblogging/content curation stuff. The key to it is to build a relationship with your readers so they will want to read your engaging content and keep coming back to your blog for more! Niche blogging works very well so I think your idea of focusing on video games and entertainment is a good one. If you write good content (reviewing the latest video games, talking about the games, post great pics and videos, etc.) you should be able to build readership. Give them something of value so they want to come back to your site. Offer giveaways and contests to increase RSS signups. Monetize through affiliate links to Amazon etc. Once you get a decent amount of traffic the advertisers will begin to contact you directly. You can offer them banner ad placement, sponsored content, participate in giveaways with them, etc. Blogging is not a "get rich quick" overnight method but I can tell you from personal experience that you can make decent money in it if you take the time to do it right.

    As other's have said:

    Yes...

However if you want to make REAL money blogging make sure you know the niche VERY well and get your content on some of the authority sites in the niche linking back to your blog.

Once you get traffic, turn them into subscribers to your blog.

Updated relevant content and lots of it and you will do well.

The video game niche is a pretty volatile niche. If you are looking to getting into it do A LOT OF REASEARCH and narrow it down to a very specific market.

Of course blogs still make money these days - It doesn't really matter whether it's a blog or a static webpage/site, what matters is the content you provide, how you structure the site(s) and what kinds of backlinks you create - or if you are not interested in SEO traffic, how else you drive traffic.

You should share with us your promotional strategy with us first in order for us to give you any specific advice.

Blogging alone in and of itself is never the revenue source, it's a platform you use to engage customers! Adsense is one method but there's others - opt-ins to build a list that you can sell to, selling ebooks, private ads, selling membership sites, affiliate links, etc.

Blogging is still a good way to make money. However it takes time to create quality content and get some good amount of traffic flowing. But once you reach a good point, you can easily make good amount of money every month just with blogging. There are many successful bloggers make 5 figures monthly just by blogging.

Make sure you build a list or make it a membership site instead. I would never monetize with Adsense. If you have some good amount of traffic on your site, you can easily make more money by selling advertising space and with affiliate products. Just my thoughts.

I agree with headmaster211- membership site is a way to go. If I would of start a blog, I would start with a FREE membership and build up till the point I could of charge membership fee.
You should know your niche and write genuine content and reviews.
You can use different monetization methods using your blog, but my favorite is a list building, especially in your niche.

Yes, you can make money by blogging. But to earn money by blogging you should have quality articles and more and more traffic.

There are many ways to monetize your blog already mentioned above.

    Hi Tony,

I just had my first $4000 month with AdSense and while some of this was definitely targeted traffic that I paid for, a decent portion is from blogging and I'm only a couple years into it myself so I really urge people to blog.

Be sure to find something you love or you'll never stick with it.. but it sounds like you're heading that direction (lot of money in that niche too), so absolutely do it!
    Best of luck!

Blogging is just running a website. Yes you can make money with a games blog.

You can have a mailing list sign up and sell to your list. You can join affiliate programmes and receive commission on each sale (plenty of games available on aff programmes). You can join adsense. You can guest blog. Become a youtube partner.

    The list goes on...

Nothing has changed, a blog is also a site and if sites still make money then blogs can because whatever you can do with a site can be done with a blog or even more.

Of Course, The truth is a lot of bloggers don't. Neither do they want to. There are a lot of people who use their blogs as a form of communication and community. Making money from the blog itself is not their aim. Many bloggers use their blogs as a platform for their offline business. For example a freelance writer who uses their blog as a platform to show off their portfolio and to attract clients. But basically, Anybody who's good at it, can make an extra or more money on it.

Blogging can make you money but your blog needs to have a unique voice OR you need to blog around non-competitive long-tail subject matter that you could expand on over MANY posts.

Something to know ahead of time is that it's not the "blogging" that's making your money. It's the research, effort, hard work, and persistence that you have toward making it work that gets the results.

A blog is just a website that sites there. What it is beyond that is TOTALLY up to you.

Yes blogging is still an effective way to make money.

But you should have a game plan in mind. First of all you should know how you're going to get traffic to your blog. Are you going to do seo, social media paid traffic etc?

If you can model a plan of action that is successful and you stick to it, then you can very well make good money with blogging.

IMO unless you're absolutely determined and can network like crazy, a blog in such a competitive niche is not worth it. Also if you do decide to build the blog, yo should better monetize it by putting up affiliate ads to the newest video cards or something.
