What Makes A Membership Forum Valuable To You?

If you were paying $5, $10, $20, or even more per month to be part of a membership forum, what would you be expecting?

What would make you a happy member?

What would make you initially join?

What might have you discontinue your membership?

It would never happen so I can't say. I came up in a world of free forum access, so paying seems out of the question.

The access to a community that can provide services that would othervise be hard to find. It would make my payments safe and etc.

If it were a membership forum then I would expect some updated content every month. Maybe some downloads and content that no-one else has in the niche - for instance let us say it was a "Learn chinese forum" then some updated content monthly featuring videos, downloadable guides would be good.

This works well in niches where people need constant help.

Here are some things that I have found make membership forums successful (from an outsiders view).

        - A constant stream of updated content either monthly, bi-monthly, weekly, etc.
        - Helpful moderators/administrators. These people act as 'fixtures' in the community offering help and advice to newer members.
        - Helpful veteran members. These people aren't newbies anymore but they are still helpful and nice to newbies.
        - Actually knowing what you are talking about.
        - Having an awesome reputation in the community prior to making a forum. This works well in small online communities. No I will not give examples. But if you have a reputation that you know what you are doing people will easily pay $10/mo even if you have minimal content. Still you should back it up with good content.

Before i join a forum like that i will be looking out for things like:

    1. The traffic and if i will be allowed to make money there.
    2. The level of maturity of the members, i see a lot of forums with good traffic and members but can't stand the thought of it because it's too ungoverned for my liking.
    3. JV opportunity.
    4. Like to be updated with the current happenings that i can't find anywhere.

Interesting. So you find content necessary to join the forum, apart from the content on the forum itself. Like video modules and whatnot?

I assumed you were talking about a monthly membership forum - as in a paid service that will give the user the BEST content. In that case - yes, the more content you can add whether it be videos, written modules, forum posts, how to's etc... will help you retain members.

IF the forum is just an enhancement to a product then it works well as the above but also for general support.

Well, no, I was initially talking about just a forum. A monthly membership site might be for graphics, content, etc. Perhaps all of the above. A monthly membership forum, in this case, was meaning a forum you were able to access for a monthly fee.

Might not be the feedback you're looking for, but I've noticed the models that seem to be doing well center around access to a specific individual or mastermind group. Thus allowing the user to get information tailored to their specific needs from either the individual or the group.

Make it easy to access the information (I can't always be bothered to visit a forum or site and have to log in).

Make the information short & to the point (I don't have the time to wade through hours of webinars weekly when I need to be doing).

Give me something I can clearly implement (even if you have to spell it out) so I can go away and start trying it.

Plus I quite like examples of the teachings in practise (rather than just theoretical).

Right now my favourite membership site is via a print letter, once a month. It's delivered to my doorstep which means I never forget (or get too lazy to check it out).

I can leave it by the sofa and dip in and out of it during the week which also means my girlfriend isn't going nuts because I'm on the computer... again!

If I was spending $100 per month on such a site and spending 100 hours on the site, and if the site were about earning money, then I'd be expecting to feel like the site was helping me to earn at least $2,000 per month.

A site helping you earn $2,000 per month sounds difficult. It's kind of like the saying, "you can bring a horse to water, but you can't force it to drink"... or something like that. I could show you a method that brings me a bajillion dollars a month hypothetically... but it doesn't mean it'll earn you a penny. Know what I mean? 100 hours spent is also a very long time. A membership forum I find would be most helpful for people with questions/ideas, those interested in case studies, JV/partnerships, affiliates, and so on. People would spend different amounts of time on the forum, but certainly not 100 hours. Maybe over the length of many years, but probably not in one sitting.

I pay $97 for access to a program that has...

    - private community
    - mastermind groups
    - elite training
    - high ticket aff program/recurring payments
    - tools
    - live chat/calls
    - link tracking

Although everything inside this program is head and shoulders above anything else I have come across out there, it's the access to mastermind groups and high ticket commissions that stand out more than anything else. I never experienced $1000 days before until I joined and the products practically sell themselves.
