Authority Domain Name -Should I Buy .Com for $1999... Or... Net for $9.95?

Hi Warriors,

I am in the process of creating a proper fully-fledged Authority site in a mainstream niche and I'm looking for a domain name.

The one that I like best has 2 options:

The .Com extension @ $1999 (Premium Domain)

...or...

The .Net extension @ $9.95 (Normal Domain)

My question is...

What are your thoughts on these extensions?

Is the .Com extension really worth 100 times more than the .Net?

Would I be better buying the .Net and then spending the saved $2000 on link-building and content creation?

Let me know what you think - look forward to your thoughts.

Cheers,

Kenneth

I can't give a great SEO answer, but I hate domains that aren't .com.

Com domains are SOOOO much better for branding.

It looks so much more professional.

    And people remember them better.

Is the .com a premium domain that is not actually live on the internet? Is the .com domain aged and has it been online with a website for a while?

If the answer is no, then .net will work just fine. If the .com has a website today and has been around for a while, that will make a difference in rankings. Otherwise, forget paying the extra money.

      Thanks for the reply.

The .com Premium Domain isn't live on the Internet. It is just parked and up for sale as a Premium Domain.

Someone has already purchased the .com by the sounds of it because if it was not taken it would not cost much more than the .net. I think you need to see if the .com is just parked or being used already. Many domain names are bought and parked because 1- they want to sell it or 2- bought it and didn't take action, and many more reasons I'm guessing.

      The domain isn't being used.

When you go to the site it redirects to HugeDomains.com where it is being offered for nearly $2000.

.com's are always better, but the question is if its $2000 better. If you post the domain we might be able to help you decide if it's worth it.

If not you can always try and negotiate down the price. Most of the time these domains just sit there and if they haven't gotten any offers on it they would probably take $100 rather than renew it again.

      Interesting thought.

Maybe I can see if they will sell it for less than $2000.

At $100 I would "snap it up" in a heartbeat!

If it's going to be your main site, your bread and butter, then it's definitely worth having the .com.

Assess the current backlink profile and domain authority of the .com.
I would guess that if you're debating between something costing 2K and something costing $9 then you probably haven't bought many sites/domains before, and may not know how to correctly assess their worth.

Why not look for another .com which isn't in use?
2,000 can make a real difference in your marketing, which is essential to your success.

One thing to consider: If you're so dead set on a particular domain name, you're likely to be too posessed by the idea of SEO.

SEO is important, but not $2000 important. There is higher quality traffic available for substantially less.

If you're building an authority site it probably makes more sense to focus on content syndication, and just get some other relevent .com domain.

It all depends on a number of various of questions - EG - what the domain name is, what your plans are (exit strategy?) and whether you believe that your return (whether that's an exit or an income) justifies the outlay - is the $2k going to give you more value than that back in the long term?

a proper fully-fledged Authority site in a mainstream niche
How crucial is the branding? What is your traffic strategy and how much is this affected by the domain extension? Based on the market it is in, does the .net make you look like a cheapskate and is this a crucial factor?

Only you know all the answers so you need to answer all of these questions and more and then make a decision, we can only offer guidance but ultimately only you will know if it's a good idea or not.

Here's what I'd do and have done successfully. I'd grab that .net right now. NOW. Then I would make an offer on the .com, and not $2K. Offer no more than $500. See what they say. If they counter with $1K, say I've already got the .net and $500 is my budget, so thanks anyway. I got a domain they were asking for $2,500 and I offered $200. After several attempts to get more from me, I gave them the line I told you to use and they said ... ok.

I would just either purchase the .net extension or choose an entire different domain name which has the .com extension available to begin with. $2,000 can be used for link building, content creation, etc.

Personally it would take a lot...and I mean a lot...for me to fork over $2k for a simple parked domain. However that's ultimately up for you to decide and sbucciarel has given you some incredible advice.

One thing I'd like to echo...grab the .net domain NOW. Even though you may prefer .com, .net is certainly a viable option and you don't want to miss the fact that it's available. $10 is not much of a risk after all, so go for it and figure out the rest from there.

      Best of luck,
      Derek

.com is always preferable to me. But this time I would buy .net and rest of the money I would invest for quality content and traffic.

One thing you should be aware of. Just because some registrar like Godaddy calls this a premium domain name doesn't mean it is one. All that means is that someone grabbed it up and is trying to make some money from it through the registrar. They tack a high price on it and call it premium.

Any truly premium domain name will be sold out in all extensions. Those are the really hot domains and people will take what they can get.

I can't believe that everyone in our field is so crazy about exact domain name. As most of us know that when we search at any domain provider most of time domain has taken by someone else and it is in the ques for sale for huge pries. That means that domain is not in use. So why we go after that, when we can add some useful SEO word and get same wording domain easily. You can start your website building immediately and you are ahead of all. Exact domains may be sold later but meanwhile your site gets authority and you are ahead so that the exact domain can't beat it. Now days Google had changed it's algorithm and exact domain names are getting slapped if they don't have quality. I think I have cleared my point. So, Don't waste time and money.

He didn't actually say exact match domain name or domain name for SEO, so it may be that the domain perfectly describes the type of site he is building or that he just loves that domain name.

If I were building an authority site, I would probably consider doing a branded domain name and it's usually easier to find one ... you just have to think one up. I mean Google didn't mean anything until Google bought it and used it.

    Hi Guys,

    Quick update:

I've bought the .Net domain now so that is safely mine.

Now I can consider putting in a bid for the .Com.

I will keep the thread updated on what happens with trying to get the .Com .

    Kenneth

P.S. - This is NOT an exact match domain. It will be for a 1000+ page site on a big topic online with LOADS of useful information.

Looks great = nice professional design and good content.

      Quick question...

How easy do you find it to monetize the traffic for this market?

Do you sell your own products or affiliate offers (or both)?

      Thanks,

      Kenneth

If only .com is taken and all the other extension are still available ( obviously not .net anymore) then the asking price for the .com is probably not based on anything solid and can be negotiated. If your project is major one I would also get .info and .org for safe keeping.
