Losing LIKES on Facebook

Facebook is about to launch a process where they remove suspicious likes.

Looks like some pages who have bought LIKES are going to lose them.

    About time!

Took over a client's facebook page which had over 3k likes.... yet even when paying for a "Featured" post within the page the views never hit 400/500 views. When I did some probing I soon found out that he had been buying likes hoping it would do something for his business....

That's interesting. I wonder how many genuine LIKES are going to be lost here and there. They are fighting a losing battle though. They do one thing and people will just readjust accordingly. There's a lot of money involved in the selling of Facebook Likes so it's not as though people are just going to give up doing it.

What about the services that offer real Facebook users money for liking certain pages. How is Facebook going to be able to differentiate those people from the real LIKERS?

This is just another example of the "new site-IM bandwagon-overdoing it-ruins site-site fixes problem" cycle.

Most never purchased a single Like, and are laughing smugly.

Some bought likes, but don't care because they knew a crackdown was a matter of time.

Some will whine, complain, kick, and scream about how "unfair" Facebook is.

Some will continue looking for exploits and will continue doing so; thereby continuing the cycle.

    All the best,
    Michael

What I've never understood is that in the long run doing it right just works a lot better. What is the value of 1MM likes and no views anyway? And what page buyer would not scrutinize that?

FB is desperate to make changes to turn around their downward spiral since the company went public.

...and forced everybody to switch to the annoyingly useless "Timeline".

Good initiative by FB. Sellers of FB Likes will definitely be thinking of Plan B.
I'm hoping that this update from FB will hit Pages with fake Likes like what Google's Penguin did to most sites.

I heard there are like 18 million fake facebook accounts. I wonder if they are related to the fake LIKES.

If you purchase likes for the right reason...... getting your fb page to the top of your keyword phrase you are intending to target, and then picking up REAL likes because you are at the top of the fb search results....

then your fake purchases were worth it.

This is how social media works today

That is exactly what I'm saying. And yes, your keyword phrase is your page name. I own dozens of pages that are ranked in the top 3 for the keyword phrase.

If you do a search for ANYTHING on fb you will notice quickly that the top 3 spots have the most likes while the junk with no likes is at the bottom and 2nd/3rd pages etc...

I agree with you. I have made a concerted effort on my one page to give away information with huge value and it is starting to pay off.

Buying Facebook likes was always just to jump start your page up the rankings, allowing you to have an easier time getting real likes...Buying them was never meant to be the final solution

    Precisely Matt.

If I had a nickel for every post I read here and other places saying "Why should I buy fake likes when they aren't real people!?!!?!?!??!?!?!?!?"

And then if I had a penny for every time I answered the knuckle head saying "ummmm, so you can capture the top spot of fb's crappy algorithm?.... maybe? hmmm?"

And then if I had another penny for the knuckle head retort of "But they aren't real likes!!!!!!!"

    Whatever.

I've only made $10 mil in IM, what do I know?

I'm curious to see how Facebook's algorithms work... I would say I feel sorry for them, with their stock problems and all...but I actually don't...sooo, guess I will wait and see where Facebook decides to move their Rook

And I guarantee you there is going to be some Jack Hole that comes into this thread in the next few days to weeks and posts:

"But they aren't real people and not real likes so you shouldn't do it!!!!!!!"

With extended exclamation points (because they are an idiot)

For anyone who truly understands leveraging the internet to generate leads, and convert those leads to sales...Facebook likes that are not 100% legitimate are a complete waste of time and effort.

The name of the game is generating leads and converting leads to sales. If you're intention with facebook is to increase your lead-flow and make more sales, it's not "likes" that makes it happen.

It's actually providing value to others and building relationships.

Too much time is being wasted on nonsense like getting bogus "likes" and bogus "views" on videos...It's time to stop trying to GET and start trying to GIVE.

I am wondering how they are going to figure out purchased FB likes, its just an FB effort to increase losing stock price and regain faith of investors.

I think that it is a good initiative from Facebook. This will prevent all of those thousands-fan-pages with almost all of them that were bought that were created just for one purpose - to sell it to other people. These pages will, however, give no use to the people that will buy them. I think it's a good move.
