Add to home screen iPhone trick..

I'm thinking about implementing this for my blog and was wondering if anybody else out there has tried it. If so, how did it work out for you?

First you'll need to create a custom icon for the "add to home screen" feature on the iPhone:

Then you'll need to install this script on your site to create a pop-up for iPhone visitors on their 2nd visit (which I believe to be key):

Add to home screen

    Steve,

It's a nifty little tool and does work. Having said that if you are going to target phone users in that way then I would definitely make sure your website is optimized for viewing on mobile devices.

That sounds a lot like a recent WSO from Jimmy Reilly:

    Is that what you mean?

Jimmy Reilly's plugin automates the offer to "Add to Home." But it's supposed to also display a splash page which makes the mobile website feel more "app like." I purchased his plug in, but am not sure the splash page is showing up for visitors, so this may or may not work correctly.

It also displays the mobile website using the iPhone "web app kit" which means the Safari address bar is hidden, again looking more like an app. This does seem to be working for me.

So-- adding the icon as a button is only part of what you need to accomplish to create an "app like " experience, going by Jimmy's good example.
