Am I on the right track?

Hi guys,

I work as a full time salesman in a retail store selling products that cost $300 - $3000 each. I've watched over the years as we increasingly lose more and more sales to the internet and I decided I want a piece of that pie. I'm creating a review website targeting these customers and becoming an affiliate of big box stores that sell these products.

Retail affiliates seem to get 2-5% of each sale, which I understand is not as much as other affiliates such as Amazon. However, I assume there is no reason why that still can't be very profitable, correct (My current commission at work averages ~4%)? I only ask that question bc I don't want to make this venture harder than needed if it is generally accepted that you cannot make much money as a big box affiliate.

My website is an EMD;co for my keyword. - "Brand" "Product" Reviews (fake ex: www;SonyCameraReviews;co) which gets 2900 local monthly exact match searches. Google AdWords says the competition for my keyword is high but I assume that is a given since it is obviously something people search for shortly before purchasing. However, TrafficTravis says it is "Relatively Easy" to rank for that keyword. The average PR of my 1st page competition is 3 and the median backlinks are 70.

I plan to fill my page with blog posts relating to features about the product line as well as publish separate reviews for each product in the product line. I will use "Model Number Review" for each of review post's titles to further target each "model number review" as a keyword.

The site will earn me money by directing readers thru affiliate links to the trusted big box retail websites where they will be able to make their purchase.

I would appreciate if you more seasoned veterans could let me know if I am on the right path. I expect a good deal of trial and error but I would prefer to limit the head banging wherever possible!

    You can always the companies directly and see they'll give you a bigger %.

    Your plan on a whole sounds great, you make the site very user crowd-sourced.

    Get people contributing reviews.

    Your on the right track for sure. Just remeber that organic traffic is not the only source of traffic.

    Create some banners, run some PPC campaigns, opt ins etc.. Get a facebook page if time permits, get some social signals.

    Running an ad campaign doesn't have to be expensive or hard.

    Not exactly a response to what you were asking but I have a few thoughts. As you are a full time retail sales person selling items between $300 and $3K there are additional revenue streams open to you online:
    1) Show people how to sell items that are that expensive in retail. There are new shop owners and new sales people that would like to limit their head banging too and if you are selling large ticket items and have been for some time then you have valuable experience and lessons to teach via an online course, ebook or similar.
    2) After you learn the key elements online, go back to those people still focused on retail and show them how to move key elements of their business online and how to get new customers online.

    Both of these are not affiliate marketing (your core question) but ultimately you may make more money by leveraging your own experience (which sounds significant) versus being an affiliate to the big box retailers for 3 or 4%

    Yes you are on the right track for making your typical SEO optimized product website. Based on the example you gave there might be some problems.

    1. if you really are using a big name brand with review and product keyword at the end. Most likely you aren't alone competing for the top page. Most likely you are going to be dealing with expert SEO pros vying for that first page.

    It might be worth a shot to test the waters before you jump in 100%. Set aside like 10% of your total budget and see what kind of rankings you can get with that. If you can't even break into the top 10 pages you might want to forget about it. Unless you have a lot of resources (money) on your side.


    2. Your best bet at success here is organic traffic. Once you invest enough money you will hopefully get to a decent rank to where you're getting a nice steady flow of traffic to make money from. 4% commission isn't a lot to work with especially when it comes to paying for traffic.

    So your headed in the right direction, but just test the waters before you jump in 100%.

    I am curious to see if a .co ranks easily on the search engines.
    I've had some quick success ranking on the first page with a .com, .net or .org and have heard that any other extension is just harder to rank.
    yes, I know seo is not the only source of traffic but just curious to learn about .co's.

    I have never had success with small commission rates like that, only 30% to 50% for one time and recurring products.

    However, the only way to find out if it will work is to get feedback from real visitors as soon as possible. Even if they decide not click on your links or do click on them but don't end up buying will help you learn about your market - invaluable information for any affiliate.
