Selling a Domain Name People DO Not Understand True Value

Hi,

I have - POD.co.uk

Got a Real Valuation done and outcome was $25,000

Tried to sell on Flippa and no luck going to try SEDO but the admin panel and Sale Process is awful!

I have emailed their support asking for them to help and still waiting after 24hr.

Anyone got some advice or do you know where I could get this domain Sold for the RIGHT/true value.

Thanks

It has absolutely nothing to do with people not understanding the true value of said domain. Rather, you seem to have mistakenly assumed that the domain would be worth $25,000 to every single person that looks at it .

What are you doing to sell that domain to someone who could actually find it useful? They're the ones that you'll have the best shot of proving the "Real Valuation" to. It's not surprising that throwing it up on Flippa got you nothing.

This is exactly the point. However, I know how you feel I had some time back some very solid domains including some potentially valuable 3 letter domains names. I put them up on Flippa and lost my shirt on them.

Ultimately it comes down to what others think it's true value is and what they feel they can do with the domain/s. If they feel they can't brand it effectively or do it justice then you won't do well out of it.

N.B. This was some time back and I don't deal with domain flipping anymore

      Good luck

I'm afraid the "true value" whether selling domains, horses, cars or fine wine is what a buyer is willing to pay on any given day. And the factors that influence price can be far and wide between.

Whilst its true there are still many domainers out there, I think many people these days like to buy a domain with an existing website - i.e. not just parked. This way the domain has "aged" properly, may have some link authority and can be valued as a business not just a domain.

Hope that doesn't appear too negative but good luck!

the real value of a domain is how much the buyer is willing to pay, not the value somebody else is putting on it.

As mentioned, the market determines the value not some valuation service.

    Thank you for your Opinions.

I totally understand it's what someone is willing to pay for it - I guess when you look on SEDO and see what is selling for $25,000 I think to myself, god they are terrible domains.

They must have value to the buyer though.

I was really looking for anyone who might be selling lots on SEDO and can offer advice or tricks?

That was awesome, lol. Reminded me of an FSU game where the kickoff return guy fielded the ball in the end zone, then pretended to take a knee there (so everyone thought the play was dead, but it wasn't, because his knee never quite touched the ground). Then he casually walked out of the end zone to the 20 yard line, and as soon as he got there, bolted 80 yards for the touchdown.

First let me say congratulations on owning a great 3-letter .co.uk domain.

Unfortunately I think you are slightly optimistic on the value of pod.co.uk. I will explain why in a minute, but let me just say that this doesn't mean that you can't get what you want for it...it just means that it will be harder and you will need a lot of patience to wait for the perfect buyer.

I own about 1500 .co.uk domain names myself so I do try to follow sale prices. I had a quick look at all verified sales of 3-letter domains that I am aware of, (that would be most! ), in the last couple of months, and there are very few in your price range of $25k...

Here are all verified 3-letter .co.uk domain sales since the end of May that I am aware of:

          ugp.co.uk - £210
          zfl.co.uk - £243
          naa.co.uk - £493
          ogp.co.uk - £230
          upr.co.uk - £310
          zab.co.uk - £328
          rfd.co.uk - £422
          wem.co.uk - £411
          plo.co.uk - £376
          bse.co.uk - £435
          ulp.co.uk - £180
          srt.co.uk - £575
          spk.co.uk - £490
          sbb.co.uk - £390
          ufd.co.uk - £210
          kis.co.uk - £619
          mov.co.uk - £220
          mge.co.uk - £411
          nwq.co.uk - £200
          otw.co.uk - £310
          koi.co.uk - £1850
          udm.co.uk - £706
          vac.co.uk - £1260
          raw.co.uk - £15000
          crb.co.uk - £5000
          tic.co.uk - £800
          ste.co.uk - £2000

As you can see, the only one that gets close to your $25k asking price is raw.co.uk at about $24k...and I would argue that this is a much more brandable domain than pod.co.uk, (although I do think pod.co.uk is among the best on that list).

The top priced domains, (except crb.co.uk) were mostly sales that happened on sedo. The reason for that is simple. The buyer approach the sellers on Sedo because they like the domain, rather than the owner putting the domain up for sale at auction or something. This means that the seller can often get away with a higher price, if the buyer has set his mind on a particular domain.

If you want to achieve $25,000 for pod.co.uk you will need to find the perfect buyer. Either you try to do that and approach them with an offer, or you will just have to be patient and wait for a few years until the right buyer comes along.

I wrote another post about the most patient seller that I know of, Rick Schwartz, we can all learn a lot from him when it comes to selling domains.

          Good luck!

When someone places a "real valuation" on anything, one should ask the person or entity placing that valuation if they would like to buy it now at a 10% or even 20% disount to that price?

If it is really that 'valuable' then the chance to make a 10-20% quick profit should be attractive, wouldn't you think??

Sedo and Afternic are probably your best bet. I use Sedo without any problems, so not sure why you think the admin panel is bad.

Actually, he gave very good advice. People try to sell domains passively and expect the buyer to just bumble along, see it, and grab it up at the price you want. It is far more successful and faster to sell domains proactively, by seeking out people who you think would benefit from the domain and contacting them with a proposal, listing why you think this domain would benefit their company. I've done it successfully quite a few times.

Right! Unless you have a very active market with ready buyers (like the stock market for larger companies), the best way to get a reasonable price for anything is to proactively market the property to potential buyers.

This is true whether you are selling real estate, a company, a website or a domain.

Even where there are active buyers in auctions like art auctions, stamp and coin auctions, etc..., the auction house publicizes the most important lots to known buyers of the particular type of item. They don't just announce an auction and see who shows up.

Well, I do have a metabolism that won't let me weigh anything over 170 pounds and eyesight so bad that I can't read a book more than three feet in front of me without contacts. How did you know?

You though, apart from the inability to use common sense in business, seem to have a stick up your rear end.

Sorry but it seems like YOU dont know the TRUE VALUE of a domain. The true value of anything is determined by what the buyers are willing to pay for it. So your valuation estimate means exactly nothing .. forget that .. what is important is what people will pay. That my friend .. is its TRUE value.

Pod.co.uk may be worth the 25k you seek, but there are VERY few potential buyers who would be willing to pay that amount (1 in millions). Listing it for sale on a site like Flippa, Sedo or Afternic is a good start, but it is not likely to be seen by the buyer you seek. It will take a lot of extensive research to narrow down your target prospective buyers, then it will take even more effort to strike up a relationship with each one to make them aware of your offer.

"They just don't understand the value of what I have."
    - The famous last words of every domainer

First of all, you need to take that storefront down (I'm assuming it doesn't make any money since you are just talking about selling a domain). At the price you are looking for it's ultimately going to come down to someone typing the domain in and seeing what's there. Even if they are willing to spend $25,000 on it, your storefront could easily lead them to believe the domain isn't available to buy. Replace it with a for sale message and contact info.

Thanks for all your help especially "The Real Deal" a fellow UK Marketer

I would say that my domain pod.co.uk is as good as raw.co.uk so I am glad you did the research on that.

I have since signed up on Afternic and was already on Sedo and will try and locate other domain holders with POD in their domain name to see if they might have interest in my domain name.

Oh eBay haha - they are all a bunch of losers who want the Earth for 2p.

Additionally, you might try searching for companies that could be abbreviated POD.

But always realize that an estimate/appraisal is just that - someone's best guess at what something is worth and in most instances since their fee depends upon your happiness with their service, some will make that appraisal higher to ensure a happy customer.

It all comes down to the buyer - it is worth the price to a potential buyer - 2 1/2 years ago I was the executor for my Father's estate - the appraisal came in about 10% less than what I always felt the property was worth but "reality" of the marketplace for property was really bad then as it is now (world economies as they are) and my brother and I agreed that if we were offered 10% less than the appraisal we would take it - we sold at a public auction and were "extremely" lucky to sell it at what he and I agreed on.

Well, imo "pod.co.uk" is worth very little. It only has so many applications and those applications have other letters or words associated with search intent that causes the simple "pod" to lose its relevance.

So you have "i" pod and you have pod "cast" and so on. How does "pod" work out for those? It doesn't.

But you may find a buyer who "thinks" it does, but you will need to be patient just like everyone else who thinks they have a high quality domain. Someone has to see it as the perfect domain for his site or you won't be selling it for much.
