Bad domain... I regret registering it!

Just a short tip on how to lessen your loses on registering domains that you may throw away before or after it expires. I guess majority of us here are having this "domain addiction" problem so this might be a little help. Before I continue, let me show you my domain addiction history and how many domains I registered and thrown away since then.

2003 - registered 2, kept 1, thrown away 1 - 1 sold after 3 years for $3,500 = happy
2004 - registered 6, kept 1 (personal name domain) - thrown all 5 = lost $60
2005 = registered 3, kept 3, all 3 websites sold for $4,150 @ flippa = happy
2006 = registered 23 - kept 1, thrown away 21 - sold 1 website for $560 = fair
2007 = registered 35 - kept 6 - thrown away all 29 = big loss of around $460
2008 = registered 42 - kept 6 - sold 2 for $1350 - thrown away 34 ($480) - fair
2009 = registered 102 for autoblogs = after a year I kept only 3 and thrown away all 99 - big loss of around $1K
2010 - registered 22, kept 3, sold 1 website for $560, thrown away 18 - not good
2011 - registered 34, kept 16, sold 6 for $1,500 - thrown away 12 - not good
2012 - registered 3, planning to throw away 1 ....

So, since 2003, I have thrown away 218 domains that costs around $2180 (excluding re-registration of some of these domains)....

This 2012, I am trying my best to limit my waste to maximum of 2 domains and limit my registration to maximum of 6.

Why I throw away domains?
Most registration came by impulse without further thinking before hitting the payment button, and later on realized that I have no time to manage that site, I lost interest, I changed my mind, I found something better, etc.... I guess most of us have the same reasons...

How to overcome (tested since January)
Registering a domain is like reading a new ebook or new technique. You got interested in a certain topic today then forgot it tomorrow because you found another better option.

If you think of something, do this before registering a domain.

1. check if that domain is available
2. put it in your list of possible domain to register (don't think that others might grab it)
3. check the domain availability everyday within a week - by the time you are checking this domain, I am pretty sure you are changing your mind because another idea is coming....
4. If the domain is still available after 2 weeks and you are still living in your dream then grab it. If the idea is not hot inside your mind anymore then forget about the domain - you just saved $10.

I can't compare myself to any of you but I always changed my mind within a week so I don't know if the above is applicable to you.... Anyway, if you have something similar experience, please share...

Right now, I have around 30 domains, 12 live websites, and plan to throw away one when it expires. The domains that I currently own and parked have real value so I don't mind paying their registration fees as I sell 1 to 3 each year at higher value.

    There's a LOT of speculation going around that some of the bigger domain companies actually keep an eye on domain searches and if they keep seeing people search for the same domain, they are likely to register it and then offer it as a premium domain at a higher price.

    I don't suggest you keep on searching for the same domain unless you are actually ready to buy.

      I've heard of this happening too. I wouldn't doubt that it's true, because if I was a registrar I might do the same thing.

      Why would you 'throw away' any domain ever? Its only $10 or so to keep the name .. so why not keep it? Domains are like wine .. they will only ever get better .. never worse (well they can get worse if there very nitch specific and the nich dried up .. but you get my meaning)

      Most of us knows how to differentiate premium and non premium domains, right? And I don't believe there are still too many premium domains left. One wee doe snot change anything... I've been doing the same thing since january and never had a problem..

      If you are holding more than 5 domains then it matters...

        You obviously didn't read what I said.

        It happens.

        Someone else in this thread has had it happen to them. You can be naive but it doesn't stop what is happening. It depends on the company you are checking the domain names through but I have heard a lot of these types of complaints regarding GoDaddy and NameCheap.

          I am aware of that. It depends on how beautiful the domain is though.... Of course if it is obviously beautiful I will grab it immediately... But always...

    Yes, I agree with WillR. I tried registering one of my nicknames as I kept checking. And by the time I was ready. The domain name was gone. So, advice is just write as many names down and whenever you are ready to buy then go for it (of course, that is if it is available...........).

    And also I have throw away about 15 domains too. Didn't know what to do with them then.............. hum

    Agree with OP. I registered about 1000 domains over the last 5 years or so and have let about 90% of them expire. They did earn a little for me in parking, but most didn't cover reg fee. Have learnt my lesson and will now only be registering domains after I create the site.

    Hmm I still dont understand the point of throwing away a domain.. I mean throw some content up on it .. or a news feed .. or whatever .. and let it fester. @ $10 - $12 a month 50 domains is only going to cost you around $500-$600 a year. I probably spend more than that on morning coffee. So the cost is next to nothing to keep them. Also if you held a domain for even 5 years @ $12 a year thats only $60 total .. if you then sold the site / domain for even a low $240 thats a profit of 400% .. if you only ended up selling 1 out of every 4 of your domains .. after 5 years .. you still would profit 25% on your total investment.. 25% is no joke .. try to get that from your bank. So basically what Im saying is throwing away domains is throwing away your money ... keeping them with a site on them costs next to nothing and should in the long run net you a healthy profit.

    And yes before you ask I own tons of domains .. and have sold quite a few.
