My Firs Real Set Back - What Can I Do?

I just had a major set back. I am still believing it is something that hostgator may be also to fix for me but I am dissappointed at the moment.

My most cherished site ( see signature) just crashed because of a mistake from hostgator. The site is exactly a year old today and it seems I will be losing 1 year of hard work.

I can't express how I feel right now but I don't want to give up. I have got emails from domain investors who want to buy the site some time ago but refused to sell cos I can see a bigger picture than what they were willing to offer but it is all gone now.

1 year of hard work is gone to the trash Can. Initially I was seeing " Connection problem. SMF can not connect to the database, this could be as a result of a busy server. Please try again." but now I am seeing a new installation which is weird.

I am not sure I know what I can do but I am hoping some one is got something to say that will help me. I don't want to give up but it is hard to take. What should I do warriors.

Sorry to hear about your loss. I know it's probably a silly question and I'm not trying to be rude but didn't you have a backup of your site?

I assume that from your error message you are using Simple Machines? Did you post on their forum or try a search at Support ? When I typed in your error message there were a lot of responses.

I just wouldn't give up that easily, you may just have a connection parameter that needs adjusting or you may need to run a db-repair on your database. But if it is indeed gone than learn all you can from the incident, move on and build a better site that you can backup and restore reliably.

I have a back up that's about 1 week or 2 old, will that help in any way?

It would certainly help change your loss from a years worth of work to one or two weeks worth!

Have you done a restore before? Do you have another server you can test your backup on - I have an Ubuntu LINUX server that I put together with an old workstation that's become an essential tool in my office. You can do without this but it makes this kind of thing so much easier.

If you post a few details about how you backed it up and what you backed up (files, database, both?) I or someone else here can probably assist you in getting back online.

    Aloha

I am not sure but one of hosgator's support rep said they have a backup for me that was done last Sunday, he is checking and seems I may not be losing much. Number 1 reason why one shouldn't panic in diverse situations as this.

Yes, I agree, Get a VPS.
Your hosting is highly important when trying to run an online business.

If your hosting goes down, then your business goes down.

Hostgator, as far as I know, makes backups for you.

If it does, good --- you're quite safe. In future, just to be sure, make weekly backups.

One of my membership sites went down when I was trying to upgrade the software and my back ups wouldn't work for myself or the software support. Hostgater had the site up and running again within a few hours of me asking for help. I think that I paid $15 but it was worth it.

If Hostgator can't help you for some reason, you should be able to get most of your content back by searching your site in Google / yahoo and clicking on the "Cached" link and copying your source back to your computer & re-upping.

This worked for me once when one of my sites got hosed. Now I backup, but back then it saved me a lot of typing.

If you have to go way back, there's always archive.org.

Unfortunately, database info, and stored files are likely not retrievable depending on what happened at hostgator's end.

Good luck man, I hope this was helpful.

Everything is back online again. I was scared but did not panic and hostgator has been able to fix everything. The only thing is that the site looks ugly but I can easily fix that in the morning.

I need to go get some sleep now now. It is 3 am in Nigeria.

Glad it's fixed but don't understand why you say the problem was caused by Hostgator. What was it HG did that caused the site to disappear or to change?

Dear April: I don't want any trouble from you.
January was long, February was iffy, March was a freaking dumpster fire.
So sit down, be quiet, and don't touch anything.

They were trying to fix something for me. I guess it is not the fault but the fault of myself and them.

I did not explain clearly enough and the rep did tell me he did not understand what I need him to do. Everything is getting back to normalty again but the site looks ugly at the moment.
