Lost traffic Website may be hacked.

I recently noticed that my website lost a significant amount of traffic. Now the reason that I think it may be hacked is because I'm not completely sure if someone is redirecting their traffic from my site or it the traffic just dropped.

Let me give everyone some details on the site. The site has been up since April and we are three editors that are working to get this site going with some good traffic. We aren't looking to make much money just yet as we want to build good traffic and audience. I'm not sure if it is allowed for me to post the name of the website here but I can provide it if needed.

Our average traffic was a bit over 300 a day and now its gone down to about 60 a day. This just began happening on Tuesday. We post new articles every other day to keep our audience coming back.

And we don't buy any links or traffic from anyone. We want to keep the site legal within Google's definitions and try to prevent the good old slap.

Now prior to Tuesday there was someone who was trying to hack into the Wordpress and i got an email saying that a certain IP had been locked out for too many attempts at logging in.

Since then the traffic went down.

I use StatCounter to keep up with the traffic and the traffic there has been about 40-60 in the past few days on my website. But when I go back to my hosting homepage and check the traffic there, it still says I'm getting over 300 visits to that Domain. So I'm assuming that someone may be redirect my traffic from my hosting server to their domain.

The problem is I don't know how to tell if the traffic is being redirected and more importantly how to fix the issue.

Any help is greatly appreciated

Thanks

Without a URL, it'll be hard to diagnose. One thing to check is to make sure that the IP that was banned was not a googlebot IP. Some security plugins/firewalls block googlebot, thinking it's an attack.

Some hackers do what's called a conditional hack, redirecting site visitors when they come through Google. Do a google search for your site and click on the link. If you get redirected to another site, you've definitely been hacked.

Also, do a "site:" search on google for your site. Example: site:IANA — Example domains (no space after the : ). If your site pulls up, you're still indexed (for now). Check for any spammy/pharmaceutical links that pull up for your site.

Good tips, however it could also be unrelated and part of the Penguin 2.0 update that appears to be in process at the moment. Good advice though....

Thanks SuzanneH.checked both ways and the links go through to the site. The site is called hiphopfirstclass.

Maybe it is the Penguin 2.0 updates, bu thus far we have tried to do everything by the book. Like I said before we have not bought any traffic or any links to go up in rank so I'm still not sure why we dropped more than half of our traffic.

Also, why would the site visits differ from what my StatCounter plug in on the actual website say as opposed to what host gator stats for my domain say?

Contact your hosting if you've been hacked they'll want whatever it is off their servers.

Or run your site through a free online scanner.

I'm not sure if I've been hacked just yet, but like I said before trafffic went down substantially and the traffic that my hosting company is giving me is not matching up with the traffic that my Stat Counter is giving me. Which is why I am concerned and thinking that my traffic may be getting redirected somewhere else. I really do appreciate everyone's feedback, if its google it does not bother me as we plan on working on the site some more. But I just dont want someone else to be gaining traffic from our work.
