What's Up With Media Buying Traffic?

In the past few days I've been hit with numerous offers involving media buying traffic.

The offers 'look' good but I need to study up on the subject more.

Anyone around here savvy about media buying?

There are plenty of cracking high traffic blogging sites that would return a huge volume of visitors to your site . . . if you've got appealing material. You can also link through direct to your social media portal (facebook, twitter, YouTube, etc) via this means. Why buy when it's free!

Thanks, that's what I'm hearing but I'm looking for a definition of what exactly "media buying" is. Add to that, what does it do?

They are most likely talking about banner ads. You find sites related to yours that have traffic, and pay them to display your banner. Hopefully their visitors will click on your banner and visit your site.

I wasn't talking about banner ads at all. I also wasn't talking about media buying . . . rather the opposite - free social media traffic via high volume traffic blogs. I take it you've actually read each post on the thread and not simply commented on selected posts.

Thanks for replying but I'm only interested in finding out what exactly is media buying. If you know what it is please explain.

"Media Buying" is purchasing advertising such as banners, pop-up/pop-unders or interstitials.

Media (effectively traffic) can be bought directly from websites or blogs (often called publishers) or from traffic networks. When buying from a network you're often buying "blind" - that is your banner or pop-ups are being served on the network's sites but you don't know where these are.

Traffic buying is very simply a case of if you put in $100 in the top, do you make a return out the bottom in revenues. Most people will do a small test campaign to check the effectiveness of a media campaign before ramping up if it shows profit.

There are many things to be aware of, including fraud traffic. This can simply be the network or publisher "watering-down" your traffic with fake traffic - e.g. bots. Which of course will never convert. Fraud traffic can, depending on the network be 20-30% or with some of the "Cheap Traffic" packages (often sold for $50-$100) almost entirely fake.

If you want to avoid fake traffic then you need to know what to look for in the raw logs when the traffic arrives, or use a traffic auditing tool such as https://trafficcake.com which detects fraud traffic for you!

    Good luck!

Warning Before You Buy Traffic – Make sure you’re using a fraud detection tool to flag any fraud/fake traffic. Fraud can be as high as 30%+ even with so called reputable ad-networks. Works on all media buys incl. banners, pops etc.

Thanks! Now I see it's nothing new. Been doing that for years but we just called it buying spots. Fake traffic is easy to detect especially when the traffic source is something like "Bumchuck, Congo" or something like that. For IM marketing now I need to find the sellers who are honorable. Any recommendations?

..not used either of those traffic sources - what is it you're looking for?

..but fraud is a problem even with the reputable networks where the bots are a lot more sophisticated.

..and the thing with media buying, as with most things in life, it is nothing new or revolutionary!
