Announcing what niches you are in on an IM forum would be lunacy.

@Alexa Cauliflower soup is very underrated IMO although it smells awful cooking it!

Why? Do you really think you're in a niche that the folks you'd have to worry about here haven't thought of at least 50 times already?

Some of the things I sell are stun guns, pepper spray, dog beds, dog treadmills, pet carriers, and pet strollers.

Ahh ok.. Bit of a faux pas is to ask this question then? Sorry I asked - thanks for the witty replies though everyone  It was a valid question, as I see the IM niche is heavily weighted, and was wondering how people outside of that arena got on.

Righto, let's all get back to the "How cun i mak money, like 2day??????11" threads..

If you have enough authority in your niche, you don't fear others jumping on your bandwagon. If they come to the table with more expertise than you, then they deserve the slice in audience.

Exactly, but even when you don't have enough experience in your niche you should know that you will eventually so it doesn't matter who knows.

But to be fair, I think this only applies to people in 1 niche. If people are in even 2 niches then obviously someone who only concentrates on the one would be able to spend more time on it.

I probably wouldn't tell anyone my niches if I was in more than 1.

      Nonsense.

However much authority you have in your niche, if you think lots of people might want to copy it (and the more authority you have, the more likely that is!), it makes no sense at all voluntarily to encourage them.

If you've spent many hundreds of hours researching and selecting all your niches partly on the basis of their lack of competition, why would you want to publicize them?!

It's taken me 15 years to reach the level of proficiency I have in my subject area - considerably more than hundreds of hours (over 10,000 hours). However, I produce visual content that can't easily be replicated - the number of people that have the skillset is miniscule. Ive been published in every major Photoshop magazine and a huge range of international art books and design manuals - will also be an Adobe Certified Instructor within the next 6 months.

Im not in this niche because of lack of competition, Im in this niche because I love it. I know, crazy huh?

I do take on board your comments though, and am fully aware that other niches can easily be exploited in such a way.

Wow, never would have thought a thread about people's niches would devolve into a pseudo argument about whether or not people should reveal their niches .

hehe.. That's the way it goes online!

My last post may sound arrogant, but Im very good at creating content.

Am I good at monetising this skillset? Not yet! Hence my involvement here, learning from the considerable wealth of experience the warriors have in this arena

Advertising services, analytics software and ecommerce fraud management tools. Provide solutions that save businesses tons of money, or earn them tons of money, and they will pay you tons of money.

Always a better business model than trying to sell another eBook to a "make money online" consumer who hasn't yet made any money with which to pay you.

I'm not in the IM niche at all. I do operate in 8-9 different markets under different pen names. (I say 8 or 9 because two of them are so close that some consider them the same thing.)

I've had entire sites copied and re-posted verbatim, with the only change being the pay link. One SOB even tried to claim that I copied them. I had to change an entire company name once because a competitor thought it was a good name and trademarked it.

So even though I appreciate your take on authority and competition, I'm still not going to trot out the list.

I will tell you that the markets I'm in have some common characteristics. They're all what I call 'obsessive' niches - hobbies, pastimes and such that people will fixate on for long stretches of their life. They all require a fair amount of discretionary income to feed the obsession, so my target audience tends to skew affluent or better. And they all tend to be pretty competitive, but don't have single 'superstar' entities - in other words, even though there is competition, there is room to compete.

Thanks John, insightful post - you've managed to alert me to possible issues I may encounter down the line, and without being derogatory!

Also awesome is the fact that you've honed in your niches to those with expendable income.

Obviously whether people declare the niches they are in or not is up to them I suppose, but there's plenty of people on the forum that are gladly showing their niche in their signature.

Clearly ... but a very high proportion of those are connected with internet marketing. Do you think that might be because it's a marketing forum and they have something to promote here, and that that's why the thread title specifies "Warriors NOT in the IM niche"?

I invest in any niche that has good conversion rates and partners/programs I can trust.

In more than a decade I tried many, many worked very well... for a while. When they stop converting it's time to switch, especially with this economy... many good programs just closed or no longer pay on time, it's a matter of keep trying. Sometimes even I become surprised.
