    From Wikipedia:
.us is the Internet country code top-level domain (ccTLD) for the United States and was established in 1985. Registrants of .us domains must be United States citizens, residents, or organizations, or a foreign entity with a presence in the United States. Most registrants in the country have registered for .com, .net, .org and other gTLDs, instead of .us, which has primarily been used by state and local governments despite any entity having the option of registering a .us domain.

Personally i stick with .com,.net and .org but i'm sure others may have a different opinion...

Think of how stupid the average person is, and realize half of them are stupider than that.

.us is ccTLD for U.S., the same as .co.uk for U.K, .de for Germany, .fr for France, .es for Spain etc...
In Germany and U.K. are .de and .co.uk much more popular than .com, but in U.S. .com is much more popular than .us. With a good SEO .us could rank very good and be on the top. I saw hundreds of websites with .us domain in the fist 3 results at Google for specific keyword.

Ranking and traffic do not boil down to the extension of your domain name alone. There are far more important factors to consider such as the content and SEO strategy (on-page and off-page). In the past, I saw non-.com domains that are on top of the first page of Google.

Agreed. There's a myth that the IP of the website is a factor
