Hello wonderful people. i have heard that it is possible to move my Wordpress blog from the free Wordpress platform to my own website still on a Wordpress platform but I do not know how to do that. Will I lose the links I already have to my Wordpress blog?

Yes, you can install Wordpress on a host and them import all your posts from the free one using Wordpress's import and export function found under Tools in the admin area.

Yes, you will lose your links. You don't own or control a free Wordpress blog, so you cannot redirect the domain to the new blog, as far as I know.

Hi Reinhard, I believe your current website is on the free Wordpress platform of .wordpress.com . There is a difference between Wordpress.com and Wordpress.org . You are currently using Wordpress.com but it is terrible for SEO and when Google indexes your site, they will probably give you a lower index compared to sites without the .wordpress behind it.

Wordpress.org works with .com sites and you can have more flexibility like changing the design of your site just by a click of a button and a ton more advantages like Plug-ins. You have to register a domain with a Web Hosting company (I strongly recommend HostGator) and install Wordpress on your domain.

HostGator is an awesome web host, the customer service is top-notch, prices are inexpensive and the quality is great. Their customer service hotline is toll-free, meaning that if you call from a foreign country other than the US you don't have to pay a single cent. Their interface is also amazingly easy to use. I strongly recommend them.

With HostGator, you can simply install Wordpress.org to your website via "QuickInstall" function in merely 5 minutes.

And yes, you will lose the links that you've already created on your Wordpress.com site. However, I recommend using that site for Link-Wheeling which can help to increase traffic to your main site as a whole. I've written a massive guide on Link-Wheels, you might want to check it out for a more in-depth explanation on the topic.

sbucciarel is right. There are limitations on the free Wordpress platform. All you need to do is follow the instructions on installing Wordpress on your server and just use the import-export function. You will lose your links because you will need a domain for Wordpress.org. This means you need to promote your site from scratch.

    Hi Reinhard

Well, you are not alone who have had this kind of problem. My solution was:

1, I created the website on my own web-hosting
2, with my new maybe similar domain name
3, I redirected all visitors from my old page to my new page automatically
4, I announced to my visitors on my new website, that I have a new website
5, If you do not know how to redirect all visitors from your old website, just type it to your new host like bluehost or hostgathor. They all have 24/7 support and they do for me everything. From installation to fix some problems. I personaly use globat.

You will do not lose your very valuable traffic!

And of course all post integrate to your new website - WordPress on your own host!

It is the best solution for that kind of problem.

Hope that helped you, let me know.

We've got to stop telling people this folks. NEVER install WordPress from a big company host's one-click installs. The defaults they have setup in those install processes leave you wide open for hackers and malicious code to be installed on your site without your even knowing it. Always install WordPress manually by downloading the software from wordpress.org and setting up your own database manually.
