How effective are giveaways? And how should I do it?

I have a small list just a little over 1000 people growing to about 40 - 100 a day. It's a gaming niche for a particular video game that fans join. My website is a blog/forum.

I don't really have many users that stay on my website for any longer then a couple minutes, nor do I have any users that have joined my forum. The only ads I use on my website are adsense and a small affiliate link from amazon that sells the particular game.

What can I do to improve what I have now and what's the best way to use this giveaway?

Edit: I'd also like to add that I only started this website a little over a week ago.

If you started the website a little over a week ago and have that many visitors a day, I'd say you're doing good, assuming you're not paying a ton for traffic.

Getting your users to stay on your site for longer and getting members to join your forum will take testing on your part. You haven't supplied a website link so I can't see what's going on on your site..

Giveaways work well sometimes and flop other times. Hopefully your giveaway gets a lot of exposure.

Hmm do you provide gaming guides? I am wondering why they only stay for a couple of minutes.

I want to also drive a point home, sometimes the reason why people are not staying too long on your site could be because of your loading time. I remember I had a blog that had a slow loading time and people were staying for a minute, then I improved the loading time and they flip through page after page. Also, make sure your website is mobile friendly because with gaming sites, alot of people will be visiting through their cell phones

Hi chilldy, maybe there not staying on the site because they can't find what they are looking for, check in your stats for the keywords your visitors are landing on your site from, if there looking for a game tip and its not there they'll jump back to google and hit the next site.
