Struggling with Niche Ideas

16 replies
Looking to start up a niche site and sell some sort of information product.

In the past I set up a service and created a site for it. I wrote articles and submitted the site to directories, I ended up above the cut-off for Google for my main keyword with about 2,660,000 results. So I think I would be able to create my own site and rank it, it's just the topic.

I'm interested in online gaming and I play a bit of chess. I looked into both, searching for a niche, but I can't come up with any ideas for monetising a gaming site, being online gaming on the whole or for a specific game. The chess niche looked promising but proved to be a lot of work, as I'd have to learn the advanced theory before writing about it.

So I'm out of ideas and in need of some help.

    There are loads of ways to monetize a gaming site m8.

    • Amazon: games themselves, accessories, joysticks, controllers, posters, consoles, gaming laptops & desktops
    • CPA: Just checked Peerfly and they have 36 offers specifically on "gaming" mostly ones which convert on first page registration
    • Clickbank and other networks: how to guides are pretty popular, there are also a few "how to earn a full time income testing games" type of guides as well
    • Paid Advertising: adsense, 7search, infolinks, project wonderful and many others to get you some ppc or ppm revenue
    • Selling banner space on your site
    Once your site gains a decent PR you can also offer relevant backlinks for sale.

    Hope this helps you get some ideas. It's not necessary that you like the topic of your site but it will help if you intend to write your own content. Gaming is an evergreen niche which grows ever stronger by the day. Don't forget as well the amount of these games which get turned into movies and books these days. That gives you extra ways to branch your site and possible sales.

      Thanks man that sounds good but should I concentrate the site on one game in particular? I can't really think of something in the gaming industry to offer that isn't already out there.

    Hey Jake

    Just pick something from the big markets, health, wealth and relationships and then look for a sub niche within that. I did a big post about this recently which might help you: http://www.warriorforum.com/main-int...e-problem.html

    Thanks

      Hi Phil,

      I was a bit intimidated into getting into the more competitive niches, for fear of getting out-competed. I guess I could sub niche them though, thanks for the post.

        Yeah, don't be intimidated. Of course, if you try and go for "how to lose weight", then it's not going to happen. So instead you would look to take a nice slice out of the weight loss market. e.g How to lose weight for office desk workers...or for those who want to lose 14 pounds in two weeks...or those who want to get their body back after giving birth...

        ....this way, there is less competition, and your product will be more targetted to the market (people) you are trying to help.

    One of the reasons i personally like gaming as a niche is that the games themselves often get good exact match search volumes and there are hundreds released each month each of those being way to cross promote accessories to go with them.

    It may not be quite the same as the more commonly quoted evergreens like health, wealth and love but they users do get passionate about gaming and it's quite easy to get them engaged and talking about games. Helps if you want to make a facebook page with loads of fans to backup your main site.

      Thanks a lot all, I'll definitely look into sub niches for evergreen niches and my ideal niche which is gaming.

      So basically I could research newly released games, get a good domain and release useful information, guides, maybe like a blog?

    You can easily make good looking game review sites as one option. Take the egamer theme for example Elegant Themes. (not aff link don't worry).

    But yes a blog/site reviewing and talking about new and/or currently popular games. News on games in development, news on mods that people have made for games and so on. Most games are available to purchase pre order so if you know a really popular game is coming up next year start writing about it now and place yourself before the trend rises.

    You can even get free forum plugins for wordpress sites and try to get a community going. Link it to your facebook page and twitter with plugins so everything updates automatically when you get new posts up.

    You've gotten a lot of great ideas on how to generate niche ideas. Think of niches in two ways:

    needs and wants

    You can further classify these, but you get the general idea. If your pet cat gets sick then you "need" an animal hospital, which means you need a vet, and probably pet meds. There are probably a few dozen sub-niches in that last sentence (think "cat health", which can be further broken down into breeds; think "pet meds", which can be further broken down; think "pet or cat health insurance".....etc.).

    Would someone invest in a $27 - $47 e-book or other digitial infoproduct to avoid having to take their cat to a vet? You bet their ass they would. But, "I don't know squat about this topic!" you might say to yourself. Easy solution. Go out and find a vet who would be willing to be your expert.

    Now, think of Jimmy Choo shoes or even the shoes with red bottoms, Christian Louboutin (the girlfriend keeps talking about the latter lol). Does a woman really "need" them? Of course not, she wants them. Some to the point of thinking they "need" those shoes. There are entrepreneurs all around the world making good money in this market (women's dress shoes is a 4 billion dollar market).

    Take a look at some of the successful niche infoproducts over the years and see if you can classify them into a need or a want:

    * How to Coach Little League
    * How to Bat Like A Baseball Pro
    * Cure Sweaty Palms
    * How Have Clear Skin
    * Better Sex, Better Relationships (there's two-in-one there!)
    * The Less Invasive Catheter
    * Rapid Action Insulin Pump
    * How To Make And Sell Jewelry
    * How To Become A Bartender In 2 Weeks Or Less!
