How Much Do You Guys Pay For Inteviews?

Right now I've basically landed an interview with one of the top fitness models around at the moment, he has 40k followers on twitter and his site gets 10k UVs a month.

He is asking for $100 via paypal.

My fitness blog hasn't launched yet, but I'm thinking this could really propel some initial traffic.

Would it be worth it?

You must be seeing a connection between having the interview on your site and a way to monetize it. I don't think that will take place automatically.

If your guest is going to endorse your site or your offers to his followers, then maybe . . . if you specifically plan a way to take advantage of the interview.

But just to assume that one interview on your site is going to launch it and get you a bunch of new traffic . . . I think that's pretty wishful.

      I suppose..

But it would give my site extra social proof. If I ask him to post the link on his site/twitter I'd still probably get a few hundred views at worst.

        Mike,

I agree. If it's site views you're after and you've got the money to spend on the expert, then go for it.

My point is, will this make money sense, which I thought you were trying to determine when you were asking if $100 is worth it.

If it costs you $100 to get 200 site views you're spending 50 cents on each view. But are views what you're really after?

In my mind, you want subscribers or buyers of your offer. If your 200 views result in 5 subscribers, you've just paid $20 per sign-up. You can get a heck of a lot better return on your money in attracting subscribers in other ways.

I don't know what kind of conversion you'll get. I'm just trying to tell you how I would analyze the monetary aspect of paying your guest.

I've done dozens of audio interviews in my niche. Some were very high power players in this niche. I have never paid for an interview.

I use the following formula: I'm doing this interview for both of our mutual benefit. This will help the interviewee get free publicity, help with their own authority, and give another avenue to get their message accross.

In return the interviewee gives me rights to the interview to do anything I want. They get the rights to the interview as well to do anything they want. As part of the deal, I provide them a copy of the interview.

I will give them an edited copy of the interview, which includes an intro, a promo for my site, the interview and an outro with another promo.

This has worked well for me in my particular niche.

Another thing that has worked is to do an email interview. I prepare the questions, and the responses are emailed back to me.

I would re-think the idea of paying for an interview as it sets a very bad precedent for all of your future interviews.

Interviews are a promotional machine for the person being interviewed. Plain and simple.

Oprah, Larry King and other talk show hosts do not pay for interviews, as far as I know.

    Good luck.

You never pay for interviews. Print, website, blog, radio.....you never pay.

This is free publicity for the author. You don't even pay to interview popular authors. He only said $100 because you didn't know any better.

      Pizzatherapy has it right.

Errr . . . you NEVER pay for interviews, no matter how respected or famous the person in question is. Why give them free publicity to further inflate their ego, whilst it will have little effect on viewing figures.

When your fitness blog launches just ensure you source good quality content to fill it regularly and the views will come. Then the respected and famous within your niche will WANT to be associated with your blog, and it won't cost you anything for an interview.

        Good luck.

OK, So I have not done 100's of interviews. I am not that important.

But the 2 interviews I have done were great in terms of links, exposure and sales. So I am still being paid. But after the event.

If you offer the interviwee a link to a website or a Bio at the end of the interview. That's their compensation.

Even the great Gurus don't get paid for interviews. Joe Polish (a Guru in direct marketing) charges $1,000 to interview guest authors and experts. They get a copy of the interview to use as they wish, and the interview (Think "Sales Letter") gets distributed to Polish's list.

If you offer a link, a Bio (100 words is enough), and a copy of the interview.....they will bite. Anyone would.

You PAY for publicity. You don't GET PAID for submitting a Publicity Release. And that's what an interview is, Publicity.

I largely agree with the two previous posters - I have done over 100 interviews, some with some major names and have only paid for interviews a handful of times.

The best interviews, by far, are those where both sides see the mutual benefit.

Have you tried offering your interviewee rights to use the audio portion of your interview as they like?

The key is to make sure you promote your site and service within the interview, that way he gives it away to his followers and you get free advertising.
