I had a question that I would like to pose. Do you think it is better to create a document or video tutorial for your website? I just finished making an overview video for JSONData.com and was wondering if I should make a video tutorial as well. What do you think the best medium is? Also, is there certain things should put in the video? Please let me know if any of you have suggestions, thanks.

  • Adamjbond,

Tutorial videos are excellent if your goal is to get a lot of views on the piece. People go online looking for free information on how to do things and when you can provide valuable content, they flock to it. This is especially true for video as it is a great medium for teaching.

Check out these tips from Hubspot on making different videos,

Let me know if this helps you,

Based on the stats, videos are better when providing tutorials on anything. Though step-by-step guide in PDF format is good, there's always an instance that people want to see exactly how you do things and that they don't want to miss anything and get an error which they usually get with written guide.

Videos are always better than texts in my opinion. Since you don't have to concentrate and read the words, all you do is just watch and listen.. I'd say tutorial videos are the way to go!

Or maybe put both of them on!

    Best of luck!

I wrote my thesis paper on the different ways that people learn. If you can do both then do it. Some will learn best by reading, other by viewing.

In this day and age you need to cater for a very diverse range of people. So you need to cater for those who enjoy the video aspect of training but you also need information for those who enjoy the written step by step instructions. If you leave one or the other out you could end up losing a lot of custom in the long run.

It depends. Some things are better explained via text, others through audio, and others through video.

It ultimately depends on what the tutorial is about.

Agreed, that in some cases it is more convenient to watch the tutorial in the video. However, it would be very good if you have the time to make them, either documents or video.
