Newbie Website Question

Hello everyone. I am in the process of building a website to help newbies learn more about internet marketing. I plan to cover social media, blogging and affiliate networking. When I say newbie I mean providing instructions as basic as how to create a facebook page or how to create a wordpress blog. I know they could find it themselves but I want to target the audience that is so new they don't even know what questions to ask, let alone what the answers would be. I would love to have some suggestions about things to include. Once I have the site up I will be back to ask for some beta testers too. Please give me any suggestions you may have on topics to cover. As always thanks for your help.

If you don't even know the topics to cover what makes you feel you're qualified to help? Plagiarism is a word that springs to mind.

Thanks for the feedback. I already have a list of topics to cover, I just want to make sure I am not overlooking something. Since I have been doing this for several years I feel like I want others to suggest topics they have struggled with so I have the best site possible. The site is wwwdotnewbieneutronium.com - it is a membership site so I am not sure what you will be able to see. I did just update it to allow free memberships. Feel free to take a look and make suggestions.

Do you have anything we can look at now so we can get an idea and maybe come up with ideas for you?

  • Dmarcotte,

This sounds like it could be very helpful for a lot of people. My suggestion would be to include a glossary of common terms and acronyms used in the IM world. These could include terms across all facets of IM including social media, blogging, SEO, SEM, etc. No matter what industry people are trying to break into, the lingo is often one of the first roadblocks to success.

This post could give you some ideas of what I mean,

Internet Marketing Geek Speak, Social Networking Lingo

This video also highlights what I’m referring to,

    Hope that helps,

Thanks for the great idea - I am going to include an index of the posts but hadn't thought of the acronyms. I will be sure to add them. I knew you guys would have some great ideas.

    Cool domain name. Pretty scientific

Here's an idea....just go to the Main Internet Marketing Discussion Forum, and browse through the thread titles.

There are a lot of pretty basic questions asked by newbies everyday. It will give you an idea of what they are looking for.

Pretty sweet domain name, it's definitely one people would remember but may have trouble spelling

I have also thought about building a site similar to what you have mentioned but the competition in this area is pretty fierce. How do you intend to market your site?

    Good luck mate,

With as much information as there is available on the net for free, why would anyone pay to join your site to get basic information. I think you would do better offering free information and make money with advertising.

Unfortunately you're going to have to do the work to design your membership product. Nobody is going to spoonfeed it to you. That said, I do think there's room in the market for something like this - offer more value / step-by-step method examples for free or as part of your membership. Kind of low cost high volume high value.

Now I'm going to contradict the above and give you some ideas. If I were you I would do some competitive analysis and then figure out how to differentiate your site. Just browse the top ranking sites for the main keywords, browse the top forums like this one and start itemizing a list.

Some topics to include, in no particular order:

    - Basics of keywords and keyword research
    - Traffic fundamentals - quality vs quantity, traffic sources, how traffic is generated, targeted vs untargeted traffic
    - Pinterest. Pinning, repinning, generating and monetizing pinterest traffic.
    - Heatmap theory and optimizing sites
    - Split testing
    - Ugly vs nice looking sites, why ugly sometimes wins
    - Basic marketing theory and marketing psychology
    - What is seo? On-site SEO. Off-site SEO.
    - Video marketing
    - What is a call to action
    - How to set up a sales funnel step by step
    - What is a sales funnel?
    - Sales letters, Video sales letters, How they work, psychology behind them, how to get started, how to split test and optimize, e-mail capture
    - Understanding your market
    - Mapping traffic sources and traffic types to monetization methods
    - Facebook vs. Twitter vs. other traffic
    - Ad quantity and ad placement, when less is more, optimizing CTR, conversions, EPC
    - How to set up a YouTube channel
    - How to SEO a YouTube video
    - How to leverage other Web 2.0's like doc sharing sites
    - How to create consumer engagement on Facebook
    - How to create consumer engagement with Twitter
    - How to setup an auto-responder
    - How to manage a list
    - How to setup a CPA campaign for PPC
    - How to setup CPA on a website
    - How to use content lockers and CPA
    - Outsourcing
    - How to sell services
    - How to create a product
    - How to package the product
    - How to set up a membership website - maybe several walkthroughs with popular plugins or solutions, amember, s2member, etc.

I could keep going but you get the idea. The thing is there is already SO much of this content out there, you are going to need to make a significant investment in marketing to rise above the noise. But if you came up with a format for this stuff that consolidated it into extremely easy to follow, precise, and replicatable steps I think you have a winner.

Actually, you just gave me an idea for an authority/membership site. Hehe. Yet another project I don't have time for. Here's the twist I was thinking: Something like the Food Network but for internet marketing. IM recipes. Except somebody already owns imrecipes.com and imcookbook.com. But that's how I would do it.

WOW - you guys are awesome!

Bluestarace - thanks for the idea on getting more topics - I will check the forum threads - I am glad you like the name.

Ruzza - I liked the name too - but I also am concerned people won't be able to spell it correctly. Hopefully they will just bookmark it and won't have to repeatedly spell it out I know the competition is fierce in this market, so I plan to use Warrior forum and social media such as facebook and linked in. I also have several people I am hoping to do a joint venture with their list.

MyWebPromotion & - Randall Magwood: I agree there is a lot of information, but you have to know what you need before you can search. My website is going to be target at the person who is so new they don't even know what questions to ask. I also think that by having step-by-step directions for many of the basics newbies will find my site useful. I am only going to charge a small monthly fee - probably in the area of $5/ month for membership and allow them access to all of the information. After all those who are just starting out often don't have a lot to spend. I also plan to have a page with recommended items that are affiliate links. Stuff like hostgator where they will need a web host anyway.

MMNTV - Thanks for the great idea - I already have many of them on my list but not all. Thanks again for the great idea. I am hoping that my site will of course be the "go to" site for internet newbies.

Thanks everyone - stay tunes. I am thinking I may beta test my site first to make sure it meets the needs of my target audience. I really appreciate all of your help and suggestions.

By the way - I chose the name because neutronium is the hardest substance known to man and after trying for several years to make money online I feel like spent a lot of time banging my head against a very hard surface - besides it sounds kind of cool
